There is one of Bryn Terfel , and also Nelson Mandella.
There are several of Barry John
and Neil Jones of Beddau near Cardiff owns about 300 of them
What am I referring to?
I'm talking about 'Groggs'
the pottery figures of Welsh rugby heroes amongst others
which are made here in Pontypridd, and which are world-famous.
and this week we look at the world of the collector..
And as you would expect there are Groggs in every nook and cranny of Neil's home
but we met at the home of the Groggs themselves
which celebrates 40 years of history this year
We talked about the history of the creation of these strange little creatures.
What is the appeal of these Groggs? What is it that you like about them?
The work that goes into a Grogg - the detail is fantastic
There are so many of them...
How do you decide which one to get next?
It's just when Richard does them now, because I have everything
that he's made in the past ten years
so every time he makes a new Grogg, I buy it.
John Hughes started to make the original Groggs back in 1965
and Richard joined his father in the business straight from school
Since then he has produced hundreds of different rugby players
including the latest one, Sam Warburton
Is there one Grogg that you covet above all others?
I'd like to have a Grogg of someone like Joe Calzaghe or Vinnie Jones
Have they not been made?
No not yet - I think Richard is making a Grogg of Joe Calzaghe
but he hasn't made it yet
How valuable are the old Groggs?
Some Groggs are sold on ebay for £500-600
Have you considered selling your collection? You could make a fortune.
No my wife would be delighted to see them on ebay
but I really like them and at the moment I just want to have every Grogg they make.
A museum opened recently in the building
to display the variety of Groggs which have been created here over the years.
These old ones here are from the sixties and seventies Neil..
How have they changed over the years?
The Groggs are more detailed now..
and the old Groggs are more, sort of comical.
I know it's only been a few years since the museum bought these back
Some of these must be very valuable.
I think Groggs of this size would cost thousands of pounds now
There are two here of Gareth Edwards...
Has he been the most popular subject over the years?
Yes, lots of Groggs of Gareth have been made..
I think his is still the most popular Grogg that you can buy.
Have you any idea how much you've spent here in total?
Hundreds and hundreds of pounds..
Thousands?
Yes, thousands.
Don't tell my wife!
