Hello hello! my name is Fiona, I made a video not very long ago about Marlee
Matlin Writing to me on Twitter.
And, I'm still very, very excited! Still haven't wiped the
smile off my face! As you can probably tell. I just wanted to make a video, now, to say
that - well to let everyone know how Amazing Marlee Matlin
is and why I actually made the video in the first place.
Because, yeah, she's pretty - pretty important, she's
a pretty amazing woman. Okay, so...all those many, many years ago
back in the 80's [laughs] Marlee Matlin was in her first movie
called "Children of a Lesser God" and, yep, its a pretty awesome movie. Anyone
who hasnt seen it better go watch it.
It really sheds light on what deaf people go through.
and what some people may be subject to. Um, I just wanted to say, yeah ok, why Marlee
Matlin is important to me.
Okay, so [clears throat] well i boug-- well I didn't buy it,
my mum bought me her autobiography: "I'll Scream Later" for my
18th birthday, which was last year. Anyway, so I started reading it
and I got like a good half way through before my birthday and I was like "Okay I
really do want to have something to read after my birthday so I'll just, I'll stop now
and I'll wrap it up"... but, there are sooo many things, like
in the first 10-11 chapters of her book that just make you go
"WOW! this, this Amazing woman has just overcome so many obstacles
and has just done so much with her life..." I cant even believe it you know,
its crazy some of the stuff that she's done and I think its so important
all the stuff that she's shared with the world. And I am really really thankful
that she's shared a lot of her personal experiences. Because it is important
to let other people in just to maybe even change their minds and their perspectives
on some things, y'know. So I really appreciate that.
Especially Chapter 11. For all those people who have her book, I'm sure you'll
all know what I'm talking about. It takes a very brave person to write about
that and I just want to thank her -- Thank YOU, Marlee Matlin for sharing that
stuff. Because it really helps..it really helps people.
I've seen it change someone really close to me, I've seen what Your words have done
for her. And um, it just seems like she has a new outlook on life after reading your book.
And hearing your story. And yeah, Im just very, very, very Thankful that you decided
to share that information in order to help other people. And to let
them know that "Silence is never the answer". So Thank You.
Umm, so getting away from all that - Marlee Matlin has definitely, Definitely shown the
world that you shouldnt think any less of anyone just
because maybe they have a hearing impairment, doesnt mean that they're
any less than you. And I just think, yeah, for people to think that
deaf and hard of hearing people can't do things - I think thats
really really silly to think. Marlee Matlin, right, she can -- she can do so much
and she is no way held back by her deafness. Ok, she has done so much and not just for
herself. She wants to tell everyone (spread the word
to) stop this immediate thought that because someone's deaf, it doesnt mean
that they are incapable of everything. And Marlee Matlin has definitely, Definitely
shown us that through her AMAZING acting ability, she started when she was 19
- thats how old I am! And she's been in movies, she won, like, she's
like the youngest person an Academy Award for her debut performance
which was in "Children of a Lesser God" like I mentioned
earlier. She's been through a lot, she's done like everything. Honestly, everything you
can think of she's pretty much done it. Like, Okay - Dancing with the stars - she
can act, dance, she can communicate in so many
different ways: Body language, She can read lips! How cool it that!
I wish I could read lips. And AND yeh ontop of that she can speak and, yeah read lips,
AND she can talk with her hands!! Like people can understand
her when shes like ... handing....like blah blah blah blah.
With hands! Like, WHAT THE WHAT!?! Most people, when they wanna talk with their
hands, they do this: "Hello! I am a hand and I like to talk"
Anyway, hah, enough from my hand... see thats how I talk with my hands and I REALLY
wish that I knew sign language - I know a little bit,
but definitely not enough. Plus, you know living in Australia they dont
really offer ASL - A - S - L We have Auslan instead.
SO yeah, I just wanted to let everyone know that Marlee Matlin is amazing.
It would be my dream come true if I could meet her and tell her this in person.
She's just an inspiring human being and its not just because she is deaf and she's
out there and she's spreading the word, but its because of her views
...she is for EQUALITY guys and that is what the whole world should be for.
And y'know what, people say "Yeah I'm for equality" but theres things that they wont
stand for like maybe, homosexuality for one. Which is a big
thing that people need to start addressing.
I dont understand at all why -- who is anyone, like who am I to say someone
cant marry someone else? Who is a politician? Who is the President? Who is the Prime Minister?
Who are they? What great, wonderful thing have they dont in their life to say
that someone who loves someone else cant get married? NO one has the right to say that,
that is horrible! I cant--its just, its not right its really
not right and I think that we really need to start just opening our hearts
- it really is all about the love. And we need to take charge and we need to just let
our voices be heard. We need to Make some Noise! as Marlee Matlin
says. We really need to and we need to take a stand...theres different rules for
different people - its not fair. We need to start opening up our minds and
opening up our hearts and letting people open up theirs too I guess.
And I know there are so many other issues that the Government
and all that have to deal with but honestly this is a recurring thing and
this is a thing that -- its got just as much importance as anything
else they're dealing with. And especially because of all of those
horrible, horrific things that have been happening in the news lately
like, with the teen suicides. This is something that says that
We NEED to take action, we need to let everyone know that
its Okay To be Gay! and that y'know, we love them.
Its a horrible thing that these people have had to go through
with the bullying and tormenting and then -- you never know what people are doing
to themselves in their own life without other people putting
on, more stuff on top of them. Its really not right and these poor, young people
have taken their lives because they couldnt deal with it.
And their families have to live with that as well, they have live with the fact they've
lost someone they love because of torment. Because they didnt think
it was right to be themeselves. It's not right for us to sit back and watch
this stuff happen and not do anything about it.
We have to be the change we wanna make. So yeah, this did start off about Marlee Matlin
and how wonderful she is and how inspiring she is and its still gonna
end like that because ...everyone just needs to, I guess, Just listen.
Just listen to other people and...Especially listen to Marlee Matlin =D...hehe
and Just really realise we need to show more love ... we just need to love.
We should start practising that. Everyone go out and buy "I'll Scream Later"
by Marlee Matlin. Go and watch her movies. Follow her on Twitter. She's replied to me
4 times in my life - so Im very excited about that,
still - smile on my face. Thank you for listening.
Im gonna put Closed Captions on it as well because it's not right to seclude people
- as I said before. Enjoy your day, have a nice one and remember to love.
Buh-byee.
