Hi, .I'm Ariel Marsh and I'm a member of the women's basektball team
here.at Cal Poly Pomona, this is your Bronco Sports Preview and I'm
here with head volleyball coach, Rosie Wegrich In 2010 your team
finished with a GPA of 3.31, how important is academics for you
here. Well we set the tone that when they come in here they were
recruited to be an eligable student athelete, but more importantly we
talk about what type of achievements they want from their classroom
invested time. And so most of them graduate in 4 years and I'm very
proud of them to say that they made it, or that they contributed to a
3.31 GPA which is the highest we've ever had, so it's very important.
So coach you've had a succcesful career both play and coaching, can
you talk about your love for volleyball. Well I've studied the game
for 35 years as a coach and I've played it for 10 years or 12 or
something, but I lvoe the dynamics of it, I love the kind of the
movement, the ball control, and its just really a wonderful sport, its
just very simple though, you have to get it over in three, but its how
you get it over that makes it challenging. And who are your top
returns we can look for this season. Well versitlity plus Courtney
Alberi is going to be a top returner we've moved from outside to
middle blocker and she is doing wonderfully and then Kris Lagmay is
the best defensive center back player we have, Kristin McNeese is our
only lefty and she is so powerful and Ashley Marshman has brought her
game up a lot, and she is very very powerful, and its exciting for me
to see her growth as she is playing 6th rotations so that very
exciting. Well sounds like you have a lot coming back. And when
you're talking about perspective student atheletes what do you really
look for. Well I look for, intitally, I look at size and the role I
need them to play. I really need, I know what we need in the next
year or two for sure. So I look at them intitally, I also look at the
feedback response from their club or highschool coach when they coach
them, I look at that, are they receptive to the feedback, because if
they are they are likely to be receptive to me and then of course
requirements thats what I look for. And just I want to work with over
achievers, I really like overachivers. Now talk about the conference
you're playing in and how tough it is. THe CCAA is a very high end
conference the reputation we have is could be the deepest and toughest
in the country. And that is supported by how many teams are selected
anually. At minimum we have 4 teams coming out of the conference
selected to go onto post season play within our region. And at times
we have even had 6. It's a great conference to coach in and the
coaches are all good, so what do you say, good players, good
coaches. And for those out htere that havent seen a volleyball game
yet, what are they missing. Well... lets see, they are missing a lot
of fun an excitment, this game is fast, its pretty complicated pretty
diverse, we do a lot of crossing paterns, and just fun stuff. It's
powerful, we've got servers that jump server from 30 ft behind the
net, and the digging that they do, which is defense, its a really fun
time. And we have the bronco pep band at all of our games, I just
love the band and the cheerleaders, it really adds to the excitment to
bronco volleyball. Well thank you coach, i cant wait to see guys
play. Hey thank you, you're welcome. That was your bronco sports
preview with coach rosie wegrich.
