I'm Cara and I've been running for Macmillan for about five years now.
I'm Stephen and I've been running for Macmillan for about a year.
I started fundraising for Macmillan before I started running by doing some
different events for them,
and that was basically because my father was diagnosed with cancer five years ago
and we had help from Macmillan nurses
both in the hospital and at home, so I just wanted
to give something back and do something to raise money to
help other people affected by cancer as well. Without Macmillan there I think it
just would have been
an altogether more scary experience and a bit more lonely really. They
give you information in a really digestible
way, and they're there to support you when you're having a down day, or
you just feel like you can't cope at that particular moment, you know there's
always someone there to turn to if you need them.
When I hear from friends
like Cara who have had first hand experience
and been helped by Macmillan, it encourages me as well to know that
whatever I can to help contribute goes to helping them,
and maybe one day I might need Macmillan's services as well,
so hopefully it will be there for when I need it.
My father passed away
early last year and last year I did the Father's Day 10k for Macmillan
in Regent's Park which was a really emotional day.
Being on fathers day as well there was lots of other people who had lost their dads,
but it was such an uplifting day and it was really good for me to
feel like I was doing something that I enjoyed, running on fathers day for Dad,
and for lots of other people and families like ours.
All of the income that Macmillan has is fundraised, so without
people running marathons or climbing mountains or getting involved in
all the other ways that you can with fundraising at Macmillan,
we wouldn't exist, Macmillan wouldn't exist.
I definitely would encourage people to try running,
the hardest part is actually starting running. I think once you start,
things like the Macmillan training plan will help and people will be able to get
to do a 10k race comfortably.
Macmillan will be behind you on race day no matter how far the distance or how
quick or
how slow you run, as long as you're trying your best and you're doing
what you can do then they'll be there to cheer you on and you'll never be made
to feel that you're
too slow to participate in one of their running events.
