Welcome to the tutorial about how to transfer a MapInfo Professional Node-locked
license.
Node-locked licenses are associated with a particular computer. To use MapInfo
Professional on a computer other than the one on which you have it activated, and without
consuming another license, you can transfer your license from one computer to another. For
example, you received a new computer at work and you want to run MapInfo Professional on the
new computer instead of on the old one.
Please Note: The number of license transfers permitted in a year is limited. The limit is
either 10 or 2x the number of licenses you have, whichever is the greater number.
To transfer a node-locked MapInfo Professional license, make sure MapInfo Professional
is running, then go to the Help menu and choose Licensing and then Transfer License. The
MapInfo Professional License Transfer dialog box displays.
You will be warned that in order to transfer a license, MapInfo Professional will be shut down.
If you wish to continue, click Yes. The Select Transfer Method dialog box displays.
Automatic transfer is easier but requires an Internet connection. Your license will be
automatically transferred to our licensing server. You can retrieve the license by
activating MapInfo Professional on another computer.
If you do not currently have an Internet connection, choose Email Transfer. You will be
guided through the creation of a Transfer Request file, which you must then email to us.
This tutorial will look at the automatic transfer first.
Select Automatic Transfer and click Next. The License Transfer Wizard takes a few
moments to transfer the license to us. When this process is finished, a message displays on
the screen informing you that the transfer was successful. When you click OK MapInfo
Professional closes. You will not be able to run it again unless you activate it again.
(More on activation in a moment.)
If you don’t have an internet connection, you may want to choose the Email Transfer option
then click Next. The Save Transfer Request File dialog box displays. Click the Browse
button to navigate to a location to save the transfer request file. Click OK to return to the
Save Transfer Request File dialog box and the click Next.
You will then be prompted to make note of some important information. Both the full path
of where you saved the file and the email address to send it, are displayed. Make a note of
both so when you are able to send an email you can easily remember the location of the
file and the address. Click OK and MapInfo Professional will close. You can now email the
file to us. Customer Service will respond usually within one business day. PLEASE NOTE that
if you alter the file in any way, we may not be able to process it, and a response may
be delayed.
You can also transfer a license during the process of uninstalling MapInfo
Professional. You will be prompted to transfer the license. However, if you plan
to install MapInfo Professional on the same computer, you do not need to transfer the license.
In order to re-activate MapInfo Professional, it’s as simple as choosing Activate Now when you
start MapInfo Professional for the first time. Similar to when you transferred the license, you
will be prompted for either an automatic activation or an email activation. Automatic
activation is recommended as it is easier, but it does require that you currently have an
internet connection. Email activation requires you send a file to us, in a manner similar
to the when you transferred the license earlier.
Once either process is complete, MapInfo Professional will be fully functional.
