Abbie Gale
Evira-Abbie Gale
I Haven't changed if that's what u mean, its not like I think Oh! I have to do this, I
don't feel that something huge has happened and all that,of course im
always anxious at times like these but it doesn't make any difference to me, I want
to do things that will get my name out there, I like to project myself, but ok
everyone has their own insecurities anyway& but I like it.. I like this
Salvatore-Abbie Gale
I'm experiencing this as something that has multiple faces Its seems liked it has
been prepared and that it has to be worked so that it can be carried out
perfectly, that's the technical part of all this, I'm experiencing it like chemistry
firstly between us and then with the rest or like something which has many
unpredictable factors which we cant work with but which can be one of those things
that maybe achilleas can do with the drums, something that he doesn't usually
do and at that moment it takes you to another level even a setback that we can
overcome and make us look good.. generally we can experience this as a
theatrical play or even dancing,it might even feel like dancing, because there is a
rhythm,a movement, it has a beginning and an end, sometimes we don't even
know the end, and that's the part that is intriguing, the fact that u can never
predict the end
Pedal-Abbie Gale
I think about this a lot& Im watching a concert and I see the group that is going
to perform coming on to the stage, I look at how they are a few seconds before and
I think of us when we are just about to get on stage and the crowd is going to see us&
and right before that we might be having the silliest conversation
Achilles-Abbie Gale
There is a good side and there is a bad side.. There is a storm of new groups and
new artists, It might be easy for someone from sweden to listen to a new artist from
japan who plays great music but on the other hand everyday we see new english
speaking greek ands, but the truth is not all of us can play good music
Dimitra Stavrou-Psychologist
I think that it derives from childhood when the child is presented to the
parents, infront of the eye which is examining, and that's why the word
examination has a double meaning, examine which means observing
something really well and on the other hand there are school examinations and
medical examinations.. so essentially examination is like constantly questioning
identity, a person who is on the stage becomes the object of the crowd's
attention, anything done looks bigger on stage, it gives away everything, I think that
even great artists get nervous before a show, I don't think there is even one artist
that isn't nervous on stage
Evira-Abbie Gale
I'm always nervous when I get on stage and to tell u the truth it doesn't go away
until half the show is over.. before I would make sure I had a drink or two so I would
be more loose, alcohol makes you comfortable.. but I don't drink anymore, I
go on stage sober.. just water, and a cigarette to relax
Pedal-Abbie Gale
Usually before we get on stage its like a feast here, lack of seriousness,we tease
each other, tell jokes silly stuff..
Dimitra Stavrou-Psychologist
there are different mechanisms for example, a group which is united give's its
members power, they stand by each other, in a theatrical group the anxiety is
shared among the members. Going on stage just a word or the tone of the voice
can be support for the rest. But I would say that there is something stronger,
besides the nervousness that is handled in a way that wont disrupt them, it's the
desensitization.. its different when you are going on stage for the first time and there
is a difference if for instance its madonna who has performed a lot of times. I would
say it is addictive after a while.. the stage can be a great experience
Salvatore-Abbie Gale
I always hope firstly that we are dynamic with Pedal because he is the person that
we directly have to cooperate with on stage we complete each other even at
some points where for example at a live when one of us has a problem the others
have to do something about it if something doesn't work well we have to
catch it and do something about it, because that's the first thing that we have
to have on our mind. When I sing I work directly with Evi, I try to listen to Evi and
then myself combining and then with everyone else because we are a band and
we perform live, if someone needs something we know even if its not obvious
to the crowd, there is a connection between us which in our everyday lives is
not there because its not needed. But at that moment we feel very connected as
humans generally there is a kind of chemistry that comes out at that moment
because what we do might sound like a clichι but it the best way to describe it ''we
pour out our soul''
Achilles-Abbie Gale
we struggle to have many concerts without projecting ourselves as something
big like when its evira salvatore pedal and achilles its different as to when we
are Achilleas and Sotiris. Whatever characters we are in our everyday lives we
are the same when playing music or giving an interview or talking to someone. I don't
push a button and become Achilles and change the way I talk to you. But there are
many groups who have created images with a kind of mystery which in some
cases works more for them
Pedal-Abbie Gale
its true that a second personality is created, you are Pedal and you are playing
music now, but in interviews and anywhere else we use our real names, the
other names are only written on the cd's or on the website. But it does create
another person who is .. you its nobody else, you are just playing with your mind
at that moment you do it for yourself not for the others.. like im him and i play
music and i sing
Evira-Abbie Gale
At that point im a stranger, I don't know you, you don't know me, so we are not
having a coffee together. At that moment I will be like I would be with someone I
don't know, someone who im not comfortable with yet, now if that seems
like i'm acting
Gratsiella Kanellou-Director
I don't think they do it to be protected from the crowd.. no..i think they do it
mostly for themselves. You know sometimes its nice to have a role going on
stage just to leave the rest of your real everyday life for a bit. For example Basilis
who is Jeremy might work at a store in the morning and at night when he goes on
stage he might want to separate himself from his morning life.. ok he doesn't live a
double life like Veronika.. but maybe that's the reason they do it just to get
away from their everyday life
Salvatore-Abbie Gale
Look there are times when that fact in particular doesn't look good to me but not
because I think its degrading to work in a cafeteria but because after a show I have
to do something to make money so maybe that's why if for instance we could live
from the band then things would be different but i think that's the reason
that we are doing something we love but to make a living we cant count on that
Achilles-Abbie Gale
Criticism generally helps get your name out there and of course good criticism
helps more than bad criticism, but not all of them are reliable. Sometimes the
person doing the review might be a friend so even if the show might not be one of
your best, he might move past the bad things and right good things like the
lighting was good and .. the atmpsphere was nice. but there is the opposite side
also which might not like you and maybe his editor told him to make a review on
Abbie Gale and maybe he doesn't like Abbie Gale.. and so he will try and find a
bad thing that might have happened and turn it into a big deal but generally
promotion is good for the band giving interviews having reviews written about
your cd's and show
Gratsiella Kanellou-Director
Criticism that has no real reflection to what you do does no good just slows you
down, it doesn't give you any direction any advice. Criticism with some kind of
basis ma take the group to the next stage. Criticism which is written so some stupid
guy take out his frustration is no good to anyone..
Salvatore-Abbie Gale
A bad as one show can be the next show is always a different story and definitely An
approval if you have the feeling that it went really well.. it gives you the urge to
do more things. And if you have the feeling that the crowd was indifferent or
that it wasn't touched or that you didn't do well enough, again because we are
used to that or we learn to get used to it, anyway, we don't give up. That's the fate..
difficult but on the other hand beautiful
Pedal-Abbie Gale
Firstly we should clarify that in Greece popularity doesn't increase suddenly.. at
least in this business its rare. For you to do something you need to do it slowly and
you need the crowd.. which in no case is like the crowd the beatles had when they
became the beatles. Now if you are on stage and there is a crowd of thousands of
people shouting your name and going crazy with whatever you do, even if you
spit the go wild, women tearing their clothes or whatever then of course
something inside you changes
Dimitra Stavrou-Psychologist
Of course on stage there is the factor that someone becomes loved and liked
from the others or there is a feeling of greatness like he's on stage and the crowd
is clapping or maybe throwing tomatoes
Gratsiella Kanellou-Director
So many good things are out there and you don't here of them even superior to
foreign productions .. some which make you say .. what more did the other one
have.. of course there is a label behind that.. a big label..
Evira-Abbie Gale
The truth is that if someone doesn't know how to play an instrument for him
to focus on the drummer or the guitarist he will focus on the singer. He will expect
apart from the good vocal to see something beautiful. Not beautiful as
concerning appearance but as far as the scene is concerned. I don't believe that I
have this quality at least how other people see it. But there are so many other things
that can catch your attention, even a simple movement of the head. But the
important thing is that the frontman knows he can do it and i don't know it
yet
Dimitra Stavrou-Psychologist
Now concerning the exposure on stage it sometimes has to do with the relationship
between the artist and the crowd and how he is accepted by it like if an artist is
having a show in an empty theatre well then that is quite awkward I don't think
that if there were only ten people there.. artists who have a crowd and are loved my
their fans, have fan clubs reaches a need for acceptance for love.. i think that the
whole world needs that
Achilles-Abbie Gale
Everytime we play outdoors.. we always tell crowd to come closer and closer .. so
in a show that we had at the beginning at the university the crowd was 30 meters
away chilling on the grass and would not come closer. But in a small bar people will
come closer and the atmosphere will get warmer.. but the band plays a part in this
.. maybe the band doesn't want the crowd to come closer but despite that it can
create a warm atmosphere.. but of course I don't know how warm an atmosphere
can get if the band is a black metal band..
maybe the crowd doesn't need a warm close atmosphere
Pedal-Abbie Gale
if the crowd is into us we get it and the whole show takes off, if the crowd is bit
cold, we cant get over that, how to stimulate a difficult crowd there is
contact and communication but up to a point and I think that its not something we
will make an effort for, to make contact for things beyond music.. whatever that
may be.. it will only be music and the
words said between the songs.
Salvatore-Abbie Gale
Another important thing is that when you are done, the show for you might
have gone well or maybe not, maybe you got disappointed from somethings and
tired from others, but basically its something like sex, as good as it may have
been for you, you always want to know what the other person thinks. And you
know the opinion you want to here first is from the people that are on stage with
you
Gratsiella Kanellou-Director
I have seen a lot of concerts not only for documentaries, im just a person who likes
going to concerts.. I treat it like a kind of ritual especially if the band is having a
good time it's the immediate relation with music besides the fact that you can stay
home and listen to an album having pressed repeat and getting into the
mood its much better listening to it live without sitting at the back and talking
you are in front you are there these i believe are a concert's magical moments
On stage I feel as free as I feel in nature. A show can give the same feeling, that
calmness and that peace even if at that moment what you are playing is intense
and powerful.. it doesn't matter

Julia Theodoropoulou-Stylist
Limits are totally subjective because you have other limits and I have different
ones. Artists wont think of the reactions but of what they would like to do
Dimitra Stavrou-Psychologist
Creative people don't belong with the mainstream and aren't even liked in
classrooms its not because they are not conventional but because they are strange
Evi Stergiou-Daemonia Nymphe (demonic bride)
Whoever comes to a concert has chosen to so he knows what he is going to hear so
at some point he has accepted it..
concerning the presence on stage I think
that it is perceived from us and from the crowd as something united with the music
and it isn't distinguished and I believe that at our past shows where the theatrical
factor wasn't so much there.. it was demanded. I feel that there was a gap that
can be filled.
Julia Theodoropoulou-Stylist
A person that is a showman, either with his appearance or with the scene, is a
theatrical element because many times they have to make or promote an album
that tells a story and gets the audience into the mood
Dimitra Stavrou-Psychologist
Firstly the meaning of a ritual has some elements which are its characteristics.. for
example there is a sense of support, of a road.. like the firewalkers in Northern
Greece.. if they forget a part of the symbolic acts they have to do.. then they
get burnt so there is a strict ritual.. something else that is included is
repetition. The third element of a ritual its function.. its function has to do with the
community's cohesion
Evi Stergiou-Daemonia Nymphe (demonic bride)
Every concert can give you different feelings depending on the space the time,
with what is going on in your life, with your mental state.. where I have
concluded is besides the differences that every concert has the common factor is
that before a show I try to concentrate and I have found some ways to achieve
that, either by being totally alone for a while or by doing some breathing
exercises like actors singers and musicians do. But I've always noticed that before I
go on stage there is a moment of panic, as much as you have prepared there is
always a bit of extroversion before I go up that I want to avoid but I cant.. maybe it's
a need to burst and after that you find the balance to go ahead.
Dimitra Stavrou-Psychologist
A disguise has many uses.. there is the mask used in the theatre, where the mask
is based on a character and is always the same. The actor acts with that mask so
that he can get into the part. There are masks which are made from artists like in
a workshop where everyone takes out what they want. The mask is used in every
civilization, Halloween lets say is celebrated worldwide. What frees this
thing and how it free it? I think a mask helps to free you because it protects and
at the same time reveals,so it is a means of expression
Julia Theodoropoulou-Stylist
A person who is putting up a play is doing it because there is a kind of
storyboard lets say so you have to create an atmosphere so everyone can be
prepared for what they see like the scene the melody even the smoke which will be
coming out..when you go in you will think
'' what am I going to here'' and then when
the artist gets on stage ands starts singing
to you, you get excited and you forget
everything, because the goal of every singer or every band is to make you forget
your problems and takes you to a beautiful place
Evi Stergiou-Daemonia Nymphe (demonic bride)
An important fact that derives from ancient theatre is the use of the mask..
women wear masks in an effort to play a certain role. A masks goal is not to protect
us, that's not its use, but it helps us project the image that we want.
The three masks that me and the girls have now like I see it, coincides totally with us
I cant imagine me wearing Maria's mask or Eleni's or Eleni wearing Maria's or mine
and so on. Its like it totally relates to our character, like the mask has adjusted to us.
I don't believe it protects me nor does it expose me to anything, it doesn't help
me feel more secure, well maybe at first I believed I could feel more secure and
other times I believed I could get embarrassed. But I finally saw that when
im wearing the mask i forget that im wearing it.. its like a continuation like
the arm or the leg..
Dimitra Stavrou-Psychologist
It helps get into the role of the mask I think and maybe it helps confront your
fears.. you cant see his face. Personality-person-deal with.. we say face to face.. tet
a tet.. all of these things with whatever meaning the words have, change with a
mask. The way of dealing with something changes when you put on a mask
Evi Stergiou-Daemonia Nymphe (demonic bride)
We know what we have to deal with fro the start, we've thought about it, we've
felt it, and we work with it. We don't think of ourselves. You don't think that the
crowd is looking at you, either way you are playing a role.
If the stage has a distance from the crowd or is higher than the crowd, or when its dark
and you cant see the crowd, there were times when even though there where so many people
we couldn't see any of them, its like playing by yourself. That was a totally
different feeling from any other show where the crowd was closer and on the
same level. There is a difference you might not get anything from the crowd
when its far away or you might see everything, I try to avoid that. I need a
distance, but that doesn't mean that I pretend there is no audience and they
don't play a part. Of course they play a part and I get influenced but I also want to
communicate but not directly. Like im an actor and I communicate through my part.
I don't want to be myself
The ritual of dressing up brings out creative stress which ultimately puts you
into the role.

The Callas
aris lakis ionas-the callas
- Mostly we depend on the whole scene, on the one hand we try and make all this
dream like with influences starting from Felini up to common architecture like the
crates we use and all these installments
we use, concrete, traditional flowers,
making the installments for a show, up to western culture, with superman and
super heroes, and all this is used like we are two supermen, so everyone can be a
superman, that's the philosophy behind all this.
- You know If I can do something then everyone can do it, or if you want to do
something very much then you will do it. That's how we played music-that's how
we started-we said we like this, we like playing music, we will try to learn to play
and so we did something if that's what you think
Gratsiella Kanellou-Director
Look I believe that they realize they live in Greece.. I mean a rock band like this
doesn't have many prospects in Greece so you know they think .. lets at least do
what we do and have fun like don't get up there with the right songs and in the
right place just get up there and break the drums in the end and do whatever we
want it may even be a means of relief..
aris lakis ionas-the callas
Even the traditional breaking of the drums is a kids tactic copied by visual
artists since the 20ies.. I break the toy so its mine.. in some way when a child takes
something from the table and breaks it becomes familiar
Julia Theodoropoulou-Stylist
yes many play a role some do it because they see that they can entertain
the audience but they do it so they can entertain themselves as well. To make a
dream come true.. and when you are in disguise you put on something which you
usually wouldn't so you wont show your weakness, so it would seem that you are
confident, like this is who I am and so what if you don't like it. They do it to
stand up for themselves because maybe as human beings they are sensitive like
most artists are, sensitive people cant be tough
Dimitra Stavrou-Psychologist
Personally I believe that even on Halloween the costume we pick out is not
random, like why does someone have to dress up like a woman and not for
example like Prince appeared, like a prince.. he feels that from dressing up
another side is projected either from a performance or on Halloween or on any
other occasion, something created by him and not from the marketing people
chosen by him.. i think there is a liberating factor and a communicative one to be
able to start a conversation with the other side
aris lakis ionas-the callas
Look even though we dress up like superman.. we are not that familiar with
comics.. our costumes are more like a direction or a message.. like if im
superman and I can play music then any
one can or we can all be superman under
circumstances etc and look for a super hero myth, one of the most intelligent, the
most talented, the greatest musician or whatever.. and coincidently it as one of
our favorite costumes when we were kids
Gratsiella Kanellou-Director
Generally I believe that concerts are plays.. surely there is some relation to
plays. I notice it from the artists themselves, like they change the time that
they are getting on stage, their movement changes, their expressions. Yes I have
many examples in my mind now from Greek bands especially with the recent
group I have.. there is no relation to the morning and the whole day that we are
travelling and getting ready with the time they get on stage. Its like they step into a
bubble, isolating the rest and they are there performing, they are in their own
faze,its something special
aris lakis ionas-the callas
Despite our behavior and how we place ourselves on stage we try to keep a
distance from the audience. we never say hi we are the or goodnight etc.. we don't
talk, we don't say which songs we played, we play and we go
Gratsiella Kanellou-Director
The Callas become different people, they are two guys who are very calm and low
profile and when they get on stage you are afraid that a guitar will hit you on the
head, they go crazy, its unbelievable for the Callas
Julia Theodoropoulou-Stylist
It the people that are a little more eccentric .. actually we call them eccentric
but they are normal if you go to another european country for example. Here its a
lost cause .. the effort is made for nothing here in Greece. And the companies wont
accept it because they think that it wont sell it wont be accepted..he will have to
adapt
aris lakis ionas-the callas
Labels have huge problems because of this because they themselves create the
groups for six months .. so it is not bought by anyone because they think why should
i buy something which i will throw away in six months .. i can download it.. in the past
things werent like that, u respected what you bought and appreciated it more and
you spent the money... now why should you spend money, there is no reason, if
you know that in six months you will find others and they will have been found by a
label through myspace. So as the situation evovles like this, the problem exists and
will keep on existing
Gratsiella Kanellou-Director
I've seen lots of alcohol but i havent seen drugs in bands generally but with
foreign bands as childish as it may seem, there have been bands, that made great
albums, whilst they were invovled with drugs, and since they stopped the drugs,
there work was not that good. So drugs do something, they liberate you so you have
to be tough and let it take you down and dont learn to be creative only through
them
Dimitra Stavrou-Psychologist
Another case is when people have e certain personality structure that doesnt
need support. Drugs play the part of support.. they are like selftherapy not only
for artists but generally also for the others off stage. They are often a kind of
selftherapy. So under that sense of course they are used on stage and in ecery
difficult situation concerning life. Another use that doing drugs might have is that it
disables the inner eye..that which judges.. that which comes from the teachers, the
parents, the church and all of the ''have to'' which a person does not function nicely
with
aris lakis ionas-the callas
So.. we do yoga.. do we concetrate? No no its only in alcohol.. like depending on
what we are thinking of doing we drink the adequate amount of drinks ... before
we go onstage we have a beer. The last ten minutes we have one or two beers
and we go on with beer..
aris lakis ionas-the callas
In art there are some codes and you know its step by step... the more you are
there the more codes you learn and you can understand some things. Of course its
doesnt mean that if you dont know... dont come or its no use because i hear and silly
things like that... what i want to say is that there are a lot of people that for example
would never listen to our music but when they see us at a show they get excited
without knowing anything, no music, no nothing... Its clearly a matter of positive
or negative energy from the other person. If the person is positive and feels that
what they are looking at and listening to has something to give back with no
importance as to whether he has followes art or if he is a musician or anything else
he just sees it as something positive..
wheras someone else sees it negatively... is normal..
Gratsiella Kanellou-Director
Especially with bands like Callas .. who dress up at their shows.. people who
didn't know them .. i think that.. in the beginning they looked at them
suspiciously. But at the same time dressing up exonerates you in a way... so
you seem to the crowd that you are making fun of what you are doing and the
other person realises that and gets then feeling
Julia Theodoropoulou-Stylist
The lively colours are chosen mostly by the band or the singer because they
obviously want to project that they are something different, because everyone
starts for that reason and its the bright colour that will be used like gold or red on
stage that meets the eye and catches your attention resulting in making you stay and
observe.. what can this person artist be
aris lakis ionas-the callas
Its hell.. there is a standard program before the show.. there is a certain time..
for example when we eat,we rest,we start drinking, now if they have told us
that we go on at 9 we set our watches so that at 9 we get on stage. If that might
change, and usually in Greece it does... if for example its 10 we are ok but if it goes
beyond 10 then things get out of hand so... generally eventhough we are loose at
shows we have discipline, and discipline is needed in what we do, so you are in
control of things
Gratsiella Kanellou-Director
They represent a generation which is way more confused.. with so much
information.. in the past it was folk, rock and maybe pop meaning Madonna.. i
think they represent a generation that doesnt like belonging.. it likes
experimenting with new sound. A more experimental phase
aris lakis ionas-the callas
It gives you the chance to dream, the thing you do, like man, you are always
dreaming of things, making plans. Im going to write a song, make an album. You
dream, if you stop it you know that it will be like shutting a big door. Dreaming is
like creating with your mind at least for us its maybe most important thing, even
making 200 euro.. what will you do with it?
