I do come from a long line of physicians. My grandfather and father were both physicians.
And I always had an interest in science. But I really enjoyed medicine as a field where
you got to interact with people and talk with people.
One of the things I really enjoy is taking someone who’s not doing well, having a lot
of symptoms — in GI [gastroenterology] we see a lot of patients who are losing weight,
having other problems — and through working with them — getting the right diagnosis
and treating them — you can see marked improvement in their symptoms. Patients I have years later
— who really now have no gastrointestinal symptoms and are doing great — I take a
lot of pride in that, in having been a part of that process in getting them better.
