From Everspark Interactive -- Hi I am Jason Hennessey....
Last week Bing announced that they've recently begun testing Favicons in their search results.
Now at first, the word 'favicon' may not sound too familiar, but trust me, if you've ever
visited sites like Amazon, Facebook, Paypal, or Google, you've seen Favicons plenty of
times before . . . even if you didn't already know them by name.
Similar to the idea of bookmarking, the word 'Favicon' is short for 'Favorites Icon.' Favicons
are those small square images - usually no bigger than 16 pixels - displayed next to
your website URL or on your open tabs in your browser. They're also seen in your bookmark
list, and on RSS feeds. Just think of them as convenient visual cues.
Favicons are beneficial for businesses in that they serve as a visual reference that
helps to strengthen your online identity, magnify individuality, and improve the all-important
idea of image branding. Even on the tightest budget though, any business can take full
advantage of their numerous benefits.
There's 5 main reasons to use Favicons, the first being:
1. Enhanced Visibility - A Favicon will stand out in the address bar as well as other locations
where Favicons are displayed.
2. Professionalism - Using a Favicon demonstrates your attention to detail and puts you in the
same league as other well-branded companies who have their own Favicons like Ebay, or
Adobe.
3. Brand Recognition & Repeat Exposure - Proof positive that Favicons aren't there just for
their looks, they have a subtle -- yet important -- role in building your unique brand. When
a visitor sees one on your website, that alone can be a strong indicator that they've come
to the right place. This helps build trust, which in turn can lead to success and longevity.
4. Differentiation - With so many websites competing for attention, anything that can
help your brand stand apart for everyone else is a big plus. Favicons will do just that
by accentuating the difference between you and your competitors. And lastly . . .
5. Usability - Favicons help make it easy to scan and locate your shortcut on a desktop,
links bar, favorites, or history menu.
And best of all, they only take a few minutes to make & upload to your site. Favicons are
just another small tool you can easily utilize that may make a huge difference in the long
run. So will Favicons become a regular player in the Bing experience? We'll just have to
wait and see . . .
