My name's Abel Barreto, visual artist, and one of the winners of the Havana Cultura scholarship 2010
The project with which I applied to the scholarship is entitled "Nube" ["Cloud"]
And it is a project that's closely related to a series of work I did before
that explore the universe of sound.
I don't consider myself a sound artist,
but I have been exploring that universe for a few years now.
I use the loudspeaker motif
which, at least in the Cuban context, has a very powerful political and social connotation
with regards to mass speeches long tradition of using this tool.
From a conceptual point of view, the project aims at "emptying" this motif,
That is, it seeks to aestheticize the object,
and to practically cross out, eliminate its meaning and connotation.
The piece is made of crystal.
And the characteristics of crystal.
that is, frailty, transparence...
is diametrically opposed to the connotations
that we traditionally associate with this object, the loudspeaker.
And its shape is like a cloud, in a very arbitrary manner.
It has dimensions of 2x1.50x 1.75 meters approximately.
And it will be suspended from the ceiling like a cloud.
All scholarships are beneficial to artists
because most of them allow
for the production of works
that allow artists to work with pieces and projects that they had set aside
waiting to have the material possibility of carrying out this type of project.
