An Indianapolis bus returning teenagers home from a northern Michigan church camp crashed
Saturday about a mile from its destination — killing three and sending 26 others to
the hospital.
The bus was minutes away from Colonial
Hills Baptist Church when it sped off Interstate 465 in northern Indianapolis. According to
witnesses, it struck a retaining wall and overturned while trying to round a curve.

"Investigators say two people had to be airlifted from the scene to a nearby hospital. That
bus carrying a total of 40 passengers is believed to be the only vehicle in the crash." (Via

The dead include an unnamed husband and wife and an unidentified third victim.
Crews had to free five people who were trapped inside after the crash. Four other drivers
helped before first responders could arrive, including one man who pull the bus driver
out. Witnesses described the accident as horrific. (Via WDIV)
"I began to look back and I hear the impact... and then I realized something went behind
me, and I stopped, and I see this bus... in the air, and people falling out of this bus
and... yeah, it was... i could've gone my whole life without seeing that." (Via NECN)
The bus driver allegedly told witnesses his brakes failed, but Indianapolis police
and fire officials are still investigating whether the bus had mechanical issues. (Via

Most of the injured have head, arm or leg injuries. The roads near the scene have been
closed.
