Over in Sochi... it was another day of surprises and disappointments
for all athletes competing in the Olympic Games on Wednesday... but full of Olympic
spirit nonetheless. Our Lee Tae-ho has a wrap up of day 5 of medal
events and what to look forward to on day 6. Good afternoon everyone.
Today we'll go ahead and kick off today's coverage of the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics
with a look at the results from the men's 1,000-meter speed skating event.
Now, we continued to see disappointing results from the favorites at the Games, with the
heavy favorite in this event, American Shani Davis, placing a disappointing EIGHTH.
Korea's own Mo Tae-bum, who was another medal favorite, also failed to reach the podium,
placing TWELFTH. Meanwhile, the Dutch national team continues
its strong showing on the ice with STEFAN GROOTHUIS taking the GOLD, DENNY MORRISON
of Canada claiming the silver and 500-meter gold medalist MICHEL MULDER taking the
bronze.
Now, moving on to the results for one of Korea's newer winter sports, CURLING.
Coming into the Round Robin session... far from the favorites, the women's national curling
team fell to the number four team in the world, Switzerland, by a score of 6 to 8 during its
Round Robin session FOUR. They were on the ice again later in the day
to face the number one Swedish team, only to fall once again by a score of 4 to 7.
There is now talk of changing skipper Kim Ji-sun, as they prepare to face off against
the home team, Russia, in their Round Robin session 6.
And although the women's figure skating competition is still a week away, all eyes are focusing
on the central figures, with the Queen, Korea's Kim Yu-na, having officially touched down
in Sochi. She arrived to a multitude of reporters from
all over the world... who were anxiously awaiting her arrival.
Speaking to the press, she said she would do her best in her final Olympic Games,...
before heading out to her hotel, where she will be staying for the duration of the Sochi
Winter Games. Now the big headlines heading into the highly
anticipated women's individual figure skating competition is the rivalry between Kim Yu-na,
figure skating's reigning queen, and Russia's 15 year-old newcomer Yulia Liptniskaia.
Now for all of you wondering which events Korean athletes will be participating in on
Day 6 of the Winter Games, here are a few great competitions to look forward to.
First off, the women's 500-meter short track event will feature three of Korea's stars:
Shim Suk-hee, Park Seung-hi and Kim A-lang. Also in action tonight will be 500-meter speed
skating gold medalist Lee Sang-hwa, racing in the 1,000-meter speed skating competition.
Now, let's take a look at a full list of tonight's events, and also the medal standings.
I'm Lee Tae Ho, and I'll be back again tomorrow with all of the latest from Sochi 2014.
