This week on Monday and Tuesday, the Agri-Fish Council
meets in Luxembourg. Ministers are set to adopt three
decisions on GM maize, and the Commission gives its
quarterly report on the dairy market. A regulation
to reform the CFP is also on the agenda.
From Monday to Thursday, the European Parliament meets in
Strasbourg. MEPs debate the Schengen Information System,
freedom of information in Italy, and the draft EU budget for 2010.
On Tuesday, Luxembourg hosts the Economic & Financial
Affairs Council. Ministers prepare an “exit strategy” for
measures taken during the financial crisis. They also debate anti-fraud
arrangements with states including Monaco and Lichtenstein.
On Tuesday and Wednesday in Brussels, Commissioner Verheugen
gives an update on progress made toward cutting red tape
in the EU. Back in 2007, the Commission launched an action plan
to cut the burden of bureaucracy by a quarter by 2012.
On Wednesday in Brussels, Commissioner Barrot presents a
new proposal for a common European Asylum System.
This aims to simplify decision-making and streamline procedures,
to prevent abuse and improve efficiency.
On Wednesday, the Environment Council meets in Luxembourg.
Ministers refine the EU position ahead of the UN
climate change conference in December. They also
debate emissions cuts for aviation and shipping.
On Wednesday and Thursday, Transport Ministers from EU
and third countries meet in Naples (Italy) to debate the future
of trans-European networks. There will be updates on the
Brdo report and Euro-African Action Plan.
Commissioner Tajani is set to sign several deals
under the European Economic Recovery Plan.
From Thursday to Saturday, Stockholm hosts the fourth
European Development Days. President Barroso and
Commissioner de Gucht join 5000 participants, including
investment guru George Soros and Morgan Tsvangirai of Zimbabwe.
On Friday, Luxembourg hosts the Justice and Home Affairs Council.
The agenda includes: strengthening the procedural rights
of people accused of crimes, and the
visa dispute between Canada and the Czech Republic�
