Want to donate blood but not sure if you can? Sergeant Monique Sapp reports.
[male speaker] If you lived in Europe for more than five years--
from 1980 until present--then for now you're an indefinite deferral.
[Sapp] If this applies to you, you have just lost out on the ability to give blood
because of the possible infection of a degenerative brain disease
known as Mad Cow. [cow mooing]
Some of the other more common deferrals that we have
are tattoos and piercings. A lot of our younger generation get tattoos
and piercings. There are about 21 states now that you can
donate in. [Sapp] So what can you do if you are among
the few who are deferred? What I would say to those senior mid-grade
NCOs and officers is to get the word out to the younger troops,
to the younger airmen, sailors, and soldiers and the family members
that do meet those criteria to get them to donate.
