Welcome to calculator use. Our lesson today is on adding and subtracting fractions.
My name is Chris and I'm an instructor at Shoreline Community College.
To add a fraction first we have to know how to enter a fraction on the calculator.
We're using the Texas Instruments 30XA in this case.
Your calculator may have different keys, but perhaps it has a similar method as well.
First we're going to enter the fraction one fourth. Click one, click the abc key, and the four.
Now we're going to add the fraction to another one so we click the plus key.
And enter the second fraction by clicking, one, the abc key, and eight to get one eighth.
So, we're adding one eighth plus one fourth. Now we click the equal sign,
and our answer is displayed, three eighths. Let's try subtracting fractions!
We enter the fractions in the same way. Click the one, click the abc key, and click four.
Then enter the subtraction key and enter the second fraction,
one, abc, and eight, finally the equal key to give us our answer.
Which in this case one fourth minus one eighth, or one eighth.
Thank you for joining us. I hope you enjoyed the lesson. Bye.
