Greetings lovelies! Hi, it's Emmy. Welcome back. I hope you guys are all doing well. Today I'll be eating
Finland once again. If you've missed my previous installments, I shall put the links down
below like always to my other Finnish tastings. So this package comes from you from my
lovely Joonaton. Joonaton, thank you so much for sending me this package of Finnish treats. And I'm excited
to taste what he included because some of them are a little bit interesting. So Joonaton included this: and this is called Kotikalja.
It's Kotikalja which is home-brewed beer. It's often served in canteens and
restaurant buffets and this is a kit to make it! This actually requires a little
bit of time and work so I actually have to brew it; heat it up; boil it; and let it ferment. I
am so excited about this. This will be a follow-up video because it requires
about 48 hours for everything to ferment and get happy; so I cant wait to try that!
Another interesting item that Jonatoon included is this: and this is a can of soup.
This is called Hernekeitto and it's a pea soup; and it is often served in school
lunches with mustard to prevent flatulence! Who would have known!? I was supposed to add
a half a can of water to this and then heat it on the stovetop which I've done; and by
the looks of it -- and the smell of it -- it smells just like split pea soup. It has a little
bit of a smoky smell to it; like maybe there's some ham or bacon in there. Itadakimasu!
Mmm! It's good. And it tastes a lot like split pea soup. It's quite salty; it's got a little bit of a smoky flavor; the flavor is a little bit different, but very, very similar to a can of split pea soup that you would find here in the States --
a little less smoky; quite salty; and the bean taste is a little bit different; it tastes a little bit more like white beans?
rather than split peas; but quite good; hearty; warm; and nourishing --
I think it would go really well with a crusty piece of bread. Nice. Got some mustard. This is German mustard -- it's called Landsberg. It comes in this really
fun jar; and I love it. It's got a nice amount of heat to it. So, let's try it with a little dash of that...
I don't know. I've never had split pea soup with mustard before. Alright, let's give it a taste.
Here we go!
Eww. I don't think I like it with mustard. Maybe I added too much. It tastes like mustard soup now. A little bit vinegared and mustardy....Un unh. I don't like it.
But if it prevents flatulence, maybe it's worth it -- you know!? The next thing we have is this:
and these are called: "Pohjanmaan Pastilli." Sorry Finnish friends!
Hmm Hmmm!
Wow! That's great!
Super pepperminty. Wow!
Abd what a delightful texture! It completely crumbles and leaves like a sandy feeling in your mouth; and just dissolves into
pepperminty goodness! It's's delightful! This is called Peruna-Lastuja:
Karthanon/Kartanon; and these are chips. Peruna means potato chips; kartanon means mansion; and these are dill --
Tilli is dill and Kermavilli is sour cream.
They look great. Alright, let's give 'em a taste.
Mmmm!
Yum! Mmm hmm! Great crunch. Quite salty (but it's a potato chip); great potato flavor; and really dilly and sour creamy.
Now, it's a really strong dill flavor. Almost like a dill pickle. It's great. The style of chip is similar to a kettle cooked chip. Not quite as firm, but nice and crisp; and nice, big air pockets.
(Crunch, crunch, crunch...) Mm! (Crunch, crunch, crunch, crunch, crunch.) Really good! I feel like the Nordic and Scandanavian countries really know their potato chips. I mean, they're really, really delicious.
Especially the combination of sour cream and onion and sour cream and dill. Scrumptious!
The next item I have is this: sadly this arrived broken; but I want to share it with
you anyways; it's made by the company Fazer; and it's broken -- I'm so disappointed by it, but...
So this is a chocolate egg; what's special about this is it's covered in a candy eggshell --
look at this! How precious! That looks exactly like an eggshell; BUT, this is
made out of sugar! So, these are called Mignon, and these are popular during Easter. It
looks exactly like an eggshell. It feels like an eggshell; it breaks like an eggshell;
it looks like an eggshell; it's amazing!
Alright, let's give it a taste. Apparently this is made out of sugar.
Crunch, crunch, crunch, crunch, crunch, crunch, crunch.....Hmmm. Am I not supposed to eat that?!
Cuz that tasted like eggshell. Unhhh...
And now that I look at Joonaton's notes, he says the little part at the bottom is made out of sugar.
So this is probably a real egg. I just ate eggshell! It's quite crunchy. It doesn't taste like
much. All right. And this is chocolate. Let's give this a taste. Here we go. Itadakimasu!
Mmm! Super, super smooth consistency of the milk chocolate in there. Almost a kind of
buttery, waxy texture to it. The chocolate flavor actually isn't very strong -- it's pretty
mild; and it's quite sweet; mostly it has this really melty, silky quality to it.
Let's give it a cut and see if there's anything in the middle. (Tho-thwang!) Nope! Just chocolate. Just solid chocolate.
And lastly we have this: and this is called Xylimax. And this is made by the company Fazer.
And...this is a xylitol gum which I've tried before; but what's special
about this is it's "flavor-changing" apparently. So, it's called Flow, and it changes from blueberry to vanilla to menthol. What?!
That sounds amazing! Ah, they're beautiful. Bright, kind of purplish color.
It's like something out of Willy Wonka -- the flavor changing gum. All right. Here we go!
Mm Hmm. Blueberry.
Definitley blueberry. And minty....
Hmm... I'm waiting for the vanilla.
Unh unh. (Laughs.) I think that's a pretty tough sell. To me it tastes like
blueberry mint and a little bit of vanilla, all at the same time. I'm waiting for this kind of
sequential experience and I'm not really feeling it. Hmm. It is a lovely tasting gum, though. Nice and blueberried
with a nice kind of punch of mint which is mentholated so you've got this kind
of cool sensation in your mouth; but...but sadly I'm not experiencing the three phases of flavors...
Hmmm. Maybe I have to just chew it longer.
Ernn. It is true that the blueberry flavor does dissipate, and you taste
mostly of the mint kind of at the end; but that's sort of true of most gums, right? -- kind of just ends and leaves kind of a
fresh taste in your mouth -- supposedly. Yeah. Not a bad gum. The texture's nice --kind of smooth and a nice kind of
rubbery resilience to it. And, of course, it has that nice candy coating initially,
so it has a nice kind of crackle when you bite into it. Hmm. It's a good tasting gum, but
I don't, sadly, feel all three phases. So that was my little taste of Finland. Joonaton thank you so much and don't
forget to tune in for this -- I am so excited to try that! It sounds amazing.
I made homemade ginger brew once before and that was really good, so I'm
curious to see if this is anything like it. And, yeah, thank you guys so much for watching; I wouldn't
be here without you! Let me know in the comments below if you've experimented with
fermentation; have you made homemade sauerkraut; homebrew; kombucha; ginger ale?
Let me know, cuz I always want to know. I hope you guys enjoyed that; I hope you guys learned something; don't
forget to "like," "follow," and "subscribe" and I shall see you in my next video!
Toot-a-loo! Take care! Bye!
Doo-doo-do-do! Do-do-do-do!
Ow! Ow! Ow!
Owww!
