Presenting... Garibaldi
Here we are with Miguel who is one of the guides of the tequila and mezcal museum here at the Garibaldi plaza
Tell us the most important spots to visit here in Garibaldi
Well, appart from the tequila and mezcal museum which is the newest attraction, we can also find a market
completly dedicated to gastronomy, the "market of San Camilito" where people come on weekends to heal
the hangover of the prior's night party... We have pozole, birria, barbacoa and a little bit of everything
- And for the foreigners, can you explain what's the "Birria"?
"La Birria" is a dish made out of meat, the original is made out of goat, but it could be of sheep or cow
and you eat that in tacos and you could have some chicken broth on the side
Ok so basically people come to get drunk and then to cure the hangover the day after
What is the most famoust thing on Garibaldi? Why is it so famous?
Garibaldi is widely known for the "Tenampa" bar which is the oldest bar and was the bar that first introduced
the whole mariachi movement here in Garibaldi, all the mariachis that you see around the plaza they came
originally because of the "Tenampa" bar.
So the original owner was from Cocula in Jalisco and he wanted to open up a gastronomic business of Jalisco's
typical food and he brought the Mariachi from there. And Mr. Cirilo Marmolejo Concho Andrade and he started
to bring the music to his food business and it became so popular that mariachis from Jalisco, they started coming
to work in the city. So when they were not playing at the bar they would come on the streets to offer private gigs
- We're talking about the decade of 1920 - So almost 100 years, that's cool
- And do you know the root of the word "Mariachi"?
- Well there is a big enigma around that, some people think it comes for the french word to marriage "Mariage"
during the French invasion but us, we think it comes from the Spanish and the "Nahuatl" dialect
and that the original word was "Mariatze" which was used to sing to honnour the *** of Guadalupe
and then, the word "Mariachi" as such came on the 20th century with the Cocacl dialect
and it means "typical music" and this language, the music and the whole Mariachi culture
are from Colula, Jalisco.
That's very cool! I didn't knew any of that!
We're walking to the "San Camilito" market, can you tell us again about this place?
This market begun back in the days when barter was popular
and they use to sell second and thirth hand items, so they established here in San Camilito and trough
the years it change until it became a market completely dedicated to gastronomy where you can find
a wide variety of food, cure a hangover and have a great time, you can hire a Mariachi while you're eating
you're also enjoying some nice music aswell
- So you find tacos, tortas... what else? - Deserts, flavoured water, beer, pozole of course
