We've been playing a lot of Pikmin 3, and we noticed that a lot of you were curious
about the game's control.
After all, it supports 3 different controllers, including the GamePad, the Pro Controller,
and of course, the Wii Remote & Nunchuck.
And what's cool is that you can swap between any of the three at any time.
But there some differences between them, so we thought we'd put together a quick video
showcasing how they all work and the exact differences between all of the different control
types.
And let's start with the GamePad and Pro Controller, since they both handle the exact same
Now if you've played the original Pikmin games on the GameCube, then you already mostly know
how this works.
And that is the left-control-stick controls both your cursor and your character's movement,
meaning if you move the character, the cursor's going to move too
Though there has been one slight change from the GameCube version, and that is you can
now click the left-control stick in to immediately center the cursor around your character.
Now these controls work fine for the most part, but it does have some limitations. For
instance, it's impossible to run away from an enemy while throwing Pikmin at them.
Secondly, the cursor's range is also tied to a maximum distace from your character,
making the Pikmin in the far distance here unreachable without moving closer.
Now let's take a look at the Wii Remote and nunchuck.
As you can see, you're now able to move the cursor using the Wii Remote' pointer independently
of your character's movement.
Which means you can now throw Pikmin at an enemy while running away from them, which
is pretty handy.
In addition, you can move the cursor much faster and it's easier to throw Pikmin precisely
And there's another benefit too--the cursor has a much greater range.
Do you remember those Pikmin in the distance we couldn't reach before? Well, since we can
pooint to anywhere on-screen with the Wii Remote, it's no problem to summon even far
away Pikmin back, which is a pretty big benefit
So clearly the Wii Remote's categorically better, right? Well, not exactly. While aiming
is much improved, there is one downfall: the lack of Camera Control.
While you can re-center it behind you using any control scheme, only the GamePad and Pro
Controller give you full a 360-degrees of camera control thanks to the right-control
stick.
It's far from necessary, but it is one advantage the Wii Remote doesn't have.
Speaking of the Wii Remote, did you know it works both with and without Wii Motion+. Let's
take a look
Without WiiMotion+, the cursor works just as it did in the Pikmin remakes on the Wii,
where the cursor stops moving as soon as you point off-screen, which can make for some
erratic--and annoying cursor movement, especially during intense battles
But with WiiMotion+, you can continue to aim even when the Wii Remote loses sight of the
TV which makes for a much more consistent experience. Check it out--we're not aiming
at the TV at all in this clip and the cursor continue to oves just fine. Hell, even if
we cover the pointer-end of the Wii Remote, it still continues to work.
It's not required, but it sure does make things a lot nicer.
