[♪solemn music playing♪] [Gordon] US and South Korean forces held a
ceremony for Korean Staff Sergeant Yoon Jang-ho at
Bagram Airfield's Improvised Explosive Device Training Site.
Today we had a memorial ceremony to commemorate the death of Staff Sergeant
Yoon, who was the first Korean soldier killed in
the Afghan war. He died on 27 February, and they honor each
year his memory and his sacrifice for the Afghan people.
[Gordon] In 2007, while deployed to Afghanistan, Sergeant Yoon worked as a counter IED specialist
and was killed during a suicide bombing at an entry point on Bagram.
Overall, it's just always great to remember soldiers
that went before you, sacrifices they made. It kind of keeps in perspective what you are
doing, and it makes you aware of the dangers associated
with it. [Gordon] Today Coalition forces use the Staff
Sergeant Yoon IED Training Site, and it serves as a symbol of the combined
efforts of removing the IED threat from Afghanistan.
Today was actually even more important with the joint effort between the US and Koreans.
It also makes you realize that other nations are sacrificing as we are
and really kind of helps form that brotherhood of arms.
[Gordon] The range commander says that having the training site
named after Staff Sergeant Yoon shows the commitment of the 44 nations
who are working together to allow Afghanistan to grow on its own.
