Hello it's Diane. On this page of my art journal
Alice meets the Mad Hatter at his tea party.
In this video I'm going to share some
stamping techniques, some very basic watercolour techniques,
and some collage.
The illustrations that I've used in this video
are from John Tenniel's original illustrations.
I put a link below the video with more details
on my website how-to-be-a-bad-artist.com
I began by painting the background
using a very large brush and watercolors and then
I used to sponge to add a textured effect.
I downloaded the
original illustration and then traced the outline.
Then I turned over the tracing paper
and went over this same line on the back.
Next I flipped
over the tracing paper and placed it on top of my watercolour paper.
and then went over the same line again. After I'd done this,
there was a faint outline on the watercolour paper.
I used the original illustration as a reference
and then went over the line again with a black pen.
I used watercolours to add colour.
I've included a list of the colours that I've used
in the link below this video.
I repeated what I'd done with the Mad Hatter
with the Hare and the Dormouse.
There's lots of references to time in Alice in Wonderland
so I decided to create a clock and I deliberately made it so it was upside down
with wings attached.
I used a stamp for this and then
I added watercolour.
I created the hands of the clock separately
and cut them out.
I wanted to add something to the middle of the
clock so I decided to cut out a flower
from some craft paper.
I decided to add a heart
to the centre of the clock and used Distress Ink
to go around the edges of the heart.
I pierced a hole in the centre of the clock and the clock's hands.
Then I used a brad to hold them all together.
When I'd finished I cut everything out with a craft knife on a cutting mat.
I wanted to add some small tea cups
and a smaller teapot, so I used some stamps
and then watercolour to add colour to them.
I drew a teaspoon and some cakes
and then added colour with watercolours.
Again I cut everything out using a craft knife.
Here I'm creating a background for the cakes.
In the foreground I wanted to have a large tea cup
and a large teapot. I used craft paper
and then Distress Ink to make them.
I cut the lid off the teapot
and stuck the dormouse on the back using gel medium.
Finally it was time to put everything together
so I glued everything in place.
Here I'm adding some finishing touches with
a black pen and coloured pencil.
I used my alphabet stamps
to write: "Twinkle, Twinkle, little bat! How I wonder what you're at!"
This is something that the Mad Hatter says to Alice.
The last thing to do was to add the teapot lid
and I used a brad to hold it in place, so it opens up like a flap.
