Hi everyone. I'm Grace Mah, and this is Velocigram. In today's episode Adam will show you how
to add Badges to your class. Before we get to Adam, I'd like to explain why badges may
increase the effort students put forth in your course.
You may be asking yourself "What are badges?" and "Why would I use them in my class?" These
are very good questions. Badges are way of gamifying your class. If you are into games,
you know how important it is to reach the next level or achievement in a game. Now students
can earn badges for an achievement in your class. Then, they can display their badges
using their Mozilla Backpack.
Badges are the digital version of the old merit badges. As the instructor, you can create
badges for mastery of an idea or concept. For example, an English instructor could create
a badge for demonstrating mastery of 'Writing a Thesis Statement.' Badges are a great way
to motivate your students to learn the next great thing.
If you have any questions regarding badges, remember, help is only a phone call or a click
away.
Hi everyone; I'm Adam Woodrow, the Instructional Media Specialist for Cochise College. Grace
told you how badges could be effective in your class; I'm going to show you how
to add them. Select the gear icon and open the 'Course Administration' drop down menu.
Click the 'Badges' link, and select 'Add a new badge.' Your badge needs a name, description,
and an icon image. A good place to find images online is 'openclipart.org.' You can also
use 'search.creativecommons.org' to find fair use sites for images and other media.
After you create your badge, choose the activity or activities to pair it with. Select the
'criteria tab' and open the 'Add badge criteria' drop down menu. For this
example, I'm going to choose 'Activity completion.' The next page shows a list of all the activities
in my course. Because I have selected multiple activities, I'm going to choose 'This criterion
is complete when all of the selected activities are complete.' This ensures the badge is only
rewarded when a student completes all of the selected activities. If I selected 'Any of
the selected activities are complete' the student would receive a badge each time they
completed one of the selected activities.

call or a click away.
