Hi guys. We're Umqombothi, Princeton's African a cappella ensemble.
Umqombothi is Zulu for African beer, and we chose this name because we wanted a sound that was refreshing and intoxicating. So we hope you guys enjoy…
We were sitting at the dinner table with a bunch of friends of ours, and we were home- sick and like 'what can we do?' And I was like, let's get together and sing.
And that was it.

It has that organic feeling -- this is what sounds right, so this is what I'll sing. Totally goes against your Western sheet music, but that's how we roll.
You want to dance, you hear the music, you want to dance. The whole crowd moves. People watching the video are probably dancing.

Ultimately, our goal is to expose our beloved campus to bits and pieces of Africa, the land that we love.
I enjoy it because it really does come from within. We sound good because we mesh together, not because we've been vocally trained to sound good together.

It would be family. Ubuntu. We thought about making that our group name last year. Yeah, it would be family.
