We have already covered the backhand side. How do you move back to the tee after you
have made a backhand in the back court? Well what I've found is that I learned that this
was a great lesson I got from a great coach and one of the things I learned that I was
doing all the time is I would go up to the front court and I would hit my backhand cross
court or down the line or whatever I would do and then I would back peddle like this
And then my opponent might hit a drop shot and I'm falling backwards or I just couldn't
get to it. So after he laughed at me for a while he said Hill, why don't you do this,
hit your back hand, hit it down the line, watch the ball like that and he goes if you
hit it cross court, like that. So this way no matter what my opponent does if I hit it
down the line and they drop shot me, you see I can move like that and counter drop or hit
a shot and if I hit my ball cross court, then I'm watching it like this so if they boast
me or drop shot me in any direction I am totally covered. So the idea here is not that back
peddling is always wrong but in a lot of circumstances especially when you are in the front court
you need to come back moving sideways, side stepping so you can watch the ball and be
ready for the next ball and that way there are no surprises possible.
