Let us do a journey through time to Birgit Enkirch. She is a costume designer and has specialized in historical dresses.
She uses extraordinary fabrics, and naturally this handcraft has its price. A hand-made robe costs around 3,000 Euros on average,
but since they are crafted with such an attention to detail she also counts film and television to her regular customers.
Katrin Heiniken has done so as well and was invited to a very special world...
Robe of czarina Catherine the Great, true to original.
Hand-painted silk taffeta with cut rhinestones.
This film dress made of silk and lace has been specifically designed and tailored for the actress.
Here in the former village school costumes for film, television and museums are crafted by hand.
Birgit Enkirch advises a singer from Denmark who is looking for a dress from the Tudor period, 16th century.
- A very fine kind of silk, a so-called cutwork, where the pattern is cut by hand from the inside.
- I find this pattern to be very beautiful, but I am not quite sure about the color.
I would like to have a real red.
The costume designer is guided by paintings from the desired time.
On this basis she creates a unique and individual design.
- This type of lace, not necessarily in Gold but also in lighter colors, is very suitable for collars and of course cuffs.
One can visualize this pretty well. It is going to be a very magnificent and vibrant dress.
The magnificent, vibrant dress requires a lot of room and often plenty of time.
Those with extravagant requests might need to wait a little longer.
- Buying fabrics is not an issue. Of course, money can get you everything in no time, however,
for many customers this lies outside the limits of their financial resources.
I have to make sure that everything is designed and planned within the budget of my customers,
and it can take quite some time until all the appropriate fabrics have been obtained.
Half a year can pass by easily.
The Danish singer Anna Maria Wierot had decided for fabrics in stock.
After two weeks she could already try on the undergarments.
- Is everything all right?
- Yes, it is important that I can still sing.
- Is that better?
- We have to add one more. This has to fit very tightly.
- Now it's perfect.
Custom-tailored dresses from this epoch have to be tried on two to three times.
- Walk a couple of steps... And sing a few notes in a corset.
- Yes, it works quite well, no problems at all.
- The only difficulty is Anna Maria's per se beautiful ***: while it is great for Rococo,
it is entirely unsuitable for Tudor ...and this is a Tudor dress.
During the Tudor period everything was very tight-laced, babies were already corded, and girls wore corsets their entire life.
It just so happened, that we followed the Italian style, late 16th century, where she fits marvelously.
On average costumers allow themselves dreams of fabrics worth around 3,000 EUR for ball, film, sauntering and wedding dresses from the Gandiva atelier.
After five weeks the first performance while wearing the new dress.
Anna Maria Wierot with her band.
- It is going to be so much easier to give a concert with this dress because
when you wear it you are actually living in this time.
Yes, in comparison the men look quite ordinary…
