Hi Welcome back this is Jason at Webination Station and you're quick
tip for today. Your quick tip for the day comes from richard a friend of mine over
at twitter his twitter handler at a puritan
and when i went to his website i noticed that
on his blog he has rss feed here
and so i clicked on it and it went to his xml file i said
richard you really should burn your feed
to make it easier for people who use rss
and his question then was well what is feedburner and what is a feed
how do i use that so that's what i want to answer today for you richard
so first of all let's ask what is a feed a feed is simply your blog
every time you create a post it is the next thing in your blog roll or your feed
many people can use that feed many different ways
one of the ways that i use that is in my feed reader i use igoogle as my home
page because in that way i can customize the news and information that i get
every day and a lot of things for me
one of the main things is i don't loose blocks for example a puritan blog
chances are if i put it in my bookmarks i might not remember to go to it as often
but by putting it through our feed onto my igoogle home page
everytime i open my browser sure enough
here is a puritan blog so every day i'll see this and i'll know that you
added something new
and a great thing about igoogle is now i can customize the news that's getting
fed to me i can choose
what newspapers to follow what articles to follow an what blogs to follow
and i can customize my igoogle
home page
so that's what a feed is it's really every time you create a blog that goes
into your feed and then that feed can be
captured and then rendered into a feed reader
there's two ways that we can really do that well there's many ways you
but two i want a look at right now
one is a little bit more complicated and it's really only good
for google users
the second is feedburner and why i say you really need to burn your
feedstock
what i've done here is you see that i've got a puritan blog on my feed
well how did i do that well first lets delet it so i can walk you through thtose steps walk you through those steps
so what i did as i went toa puritan's blog and i clicked on your rss feed
i see your xml fil e i capture your u r l with control c or comand c on
a mac
and i come back and click to my igoogle i cllick add gadgets
over the side here you see this button that says for feed owners
i click on that and this is a tool that google gives you so that you can put
this
google rss button
onto your website somewhere
well i like to use it just to add it to my feed readers i am using
richards blog and i'm going to says its a rss i only want one
lets use this google tab
let's burn his speed control v know lets generate the
html
if i wanted to put this button onto his website i would capture this html past it
into hi blog
but what i use this tool for is that now i can just try it out click it and then
look it says here a puritan blog it's taken his xml file into a way
that i can now render it onto my google home page by clicking this big blue
button
and sure enough here it is it a puritans blog
so now everytime i open my browser
i'm gonna see has a puritans blog written a new post if they have i can
now very easily
just go over
click on that post and it'll pop-up boom and take me right to his page
now the other way that we would do that is
if you've burned here's the value of feedburner
look at when we go back to Webination Station that's that's our
home page
and you see the big orange radar button we click on that okay so it's it's
rendered to feeds at feedburner dot com Webination Station
so here you can see that
maybe i don't want to use google maybe i want yahoo or netvibes or aol
there are many different ways that i could do this you can see here's my feed
and now i can very easily click on the google button because i use igoogle
i want to add
to my google home page and sure enough here is
webination station on my google homepage now
the other value with feedburner which is really i mean the mego one-two punch the
knockout punch is statistics
you can monitor
how many people have clicked on your blogs what blogs they have clicked on you can
determine why were so many people click on this blog instead of this
blog was the content was at the time of day that it was
what is it that's causing people to go here and
where the traffic generate from there's been from novel about of metrics that
you can then use to help optimize your blog
and you can start to write articles that your readers are more interested
this has been Jason with your quick tip for the day at Webination station
we will see you again next time thanks
