DEADLY SHOTS FIRED
... NEAR UK'S CAMPUS.
YOU'RE WATCHING

I'M KRISTEN
KENNEDY.
EARLY THIS MORNING
... LEXINGTON POLICE
SAY SOMEONE SHOT
TWO MEN ON
WOODLAND AVENUE.
ONE OF THOSE MEN
... DIED AT U-K
HOSPITAL.
WKYT'S MIKE BEIER
HAS THE LATEST ...
FROM POLICE ... IN
OUR TOP STORY AT 6.
Ryan
Greenwell/Junior:You
don't think anything of
it and something like
this happens. It's gonna
make me take a second
thought."
Final exam week isn't
the only thing on the
minds of some
University of Kentucky
Students. After a
deadly shooting took
place near campus
early this morning..
Ryan Greenwell and
Christian Soares say
their main focus is
being more cautious.
Christian Soares/Senior:
"It's definitely a scary
thing. It's definitely
something to be aware
about, concerned
about."
Lexington Police tell us
two men were shot
shortly after 2:30am at
the Woodland Studio
Apartments in the 500
block of Woodland
Avenue. We've learned
from the Fayette
County Coroner that
28-year-old James
Gordon died from his
injuries at UK Hospital.
Police tell us Gordon
was shot in the neck.
We're told the other
man, also in his
twenties, was shot in
the shoulder and has
non-life threatening
injuries.
This morning's
shooting happened
just steps away from
the University of
Kentucky campus,
leaving some students
on edge.Mackenzie
Deller/Freshman:
"It's really scary
because it could have
happened to anyone."
Even though Freshman
Mackenzie Deller says
she's concerned about
the shooting... she says
she still feels safe on
campus.
"You always see people
the shooting... she says
she still feels safe on
campus.
"You always see people
walking around and
there's all the call
button boxes if you
need help."
"After the shots were
fired we got a phone
call and an email."
After the shooting
happened... U-K
immediately sent out
an urgent alert...
Something students
say they really
appreciate.
"We're made aware of
the situation when it
occurs and to stay clear
of that area."

THE OWNERS OF THE
APARTMENT COMPLEX
SAY THE PEOPLE
INVOLVED ... DO NOT
LIVE THERE.
THE SHOOTER ...
POLICE ARE LOOKING
FOR ... IS ABOUT FIVE-
11... WITH A HEAVY
BUILD, LAST SEEN
WEARING A YELLOW
JACKET.
ALSO IN LEXINGTON
THIS MORNING ... AN
APARTMENT FIRE
SERIOUSLY INJURED A
MAN.
FIRE CREWS WENT
OUT TO THE COMPLEX
ON LIMA DRIVE
AROUND 8-30. THEY
SAY THE MAN
INJURED ... DIDN'T
PROPERLY THROW
AWAY A CIGARETTE.
WKYT'S CAITLIN
CENTNER EXPLAINS
WHAT KEPT THE FIRE ...
AND THE MAN'S
INJURIES ... FROM
BEING FAR WORSE.
Jamesha Rothwell /
visiting a resident:I was
just thinking somebody
was cooking!
The sound of smoke
detectors didn't phase
Jamesha Rothwell at
first.
Rothwell:
I just kind of heard
people rambling down
the steps, so I had went
to the door and I could
smell the smoke.
But what she saw
startled her.
Rothwell:
You could just see the
smoke rolling down the
steps and I told my
mom just get my
daughter and just go
and I went back in and
got my nephew and
my sister and we all
came out as one.
There were two
gentleman outside
working on their car.
They heard the smoke
detectors going off and
thought it might have
been coming from the
hallway of the complex.
Battalion Chief Hardey
/ Lexington Fire Dept:
Being curious they
went inside and
managed to find the
apartment back to the
left, apartment number
6 I believe, where they
could hear the smoke
detectors going off, so
they pounded on the
door several minutes
before the gentleman
finally answered the
door.
Firefighters say the fire
started in a man's
apartment on the
upper level of the
complex... Trapping
another man inside his
unit until first
responders arrived.
Hardey:
Come to find out after
the fact that the
gentleman had
dropped a cigarette in
his couch and had
caught it on fire.
Luckily everyone was
able to make it to
safety.
But firefighters
attribute that to the
working smoke
detectors inside the
complex.
They say it's hard to
believe how many
people don't have
them.
Hardey:
You can't put a value
on human life and
really for what it is 10
or 15 bucks a smoke
detector you really
can't just overstate its
usefulness.

Centner. WKYT.

WE EVEN SAW SOME
SNOW FLURRIES THIS

WKYT'S MIKE LINDEN

EVEN COLDER
TEMPERATURES ...
TONIGHT.
The weekend started
with snow flurries
along northern and
eastern Kentucky.
Some spots towards
the southeast even saw
light accumulation!
While thermometers
have hit the low 40s, it
felt more like the mid
to low 30s with winds.
Not a pleasant day by
any stretch.

THOSE FLURRIES THIS

ANNUAL 'WALK
MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS'
EVENT IN LEXINGTON.
MAYOR JIM GRAY

FAIRGROUNDS INSIDE
MASTERSON STATION
PARK.
WKYT'S SABIRAH
RAYFORD WALKED
TOO.
For nearly 20 years
Bette Robinson has
walked to find a cure
for Multiple
Sclerosis.Bette
Robinson: "So many
people have it and
don't realize the impact
it has on families and
friends and it can be a
very devastating
disease."
The walk started in
1989 and nationally its
grown from 40 walks to
550, but for some
people here today
living with MS they
have no plans of
slowing down.Bette
Robinson: "Everyday
you never know what's
going to happen."
Bette has been living
with MS since 1998
and she's not alone in
her fight for a cure.
Shortly after being
diagnosed she and her
BestFriend started
Bette's Buddies and
since then they've
never missed a walk.
Paulann Moore: "She is
strong and healthy
right now.. she keeps
going, and as long as
she keeps going we are
going to be here for
her."
Bette has good days,
but some are an uphill
battle.
Bette Robinson: "Most
days I'm in pretty good
shape. As the day goes
on I get more and
more tired. The hot
weather affects me, I
can't do things I used
to do. "
But she can walk and
for Bette that's enough
to make a difference.
Bette Johnson: "I'd like
to get a cure for it and
my friends and family
are here to support
that and hopefully
there will be no MS."

likely hard freeze
widespread...again.
We'll break into the
low 60s for highs on
Sunday with increasing
clouds. While this will
provide for a better
feeling day, we'll be
tracking thunderstorms
and gusty showers into
the evening.
Before one more big
cool down into
Tuesday, we'll get
much warmer
temperatures into the
second half of the
week. Hang in there!

LEXINGTON NATURAL

PRODUCE A NUMBER
OF 'MICRO-FORESTS'
IN THE LEXINGTON
AREA.
John Saylor: "We've
had 2 to 300
volunteers to come
and plant this basin.
That's a testament to
how people take
ownership of this
program to re-forest
the Bluegrass."
SINCE 19-99... MORE
THAN 15 THOUSAND
VOLUNTEERS HAVE
RESTORED 180 ACRES
IN FAYETTE COUNTY.

Stoops: "I was
disappointed for the
first time all spring with
just the mentality of
our offense. It was cold
our here, it was windy,
but that's no excuse. It
was just not up to par.
Conrad: It is very
frustrating because we
showed a lot of
inconsistency last year.
For the first ten
practices this year
we've been really
consistent. You know
to have a day like
today, went kind of
where were last year
and we don't want that.
