DANIEL: My name is Daniel, and I work for H-E-B. I work overnight. I stock the shelves.
A typical day for me usually begins with coming in, and I grab a shopping cart,
and I head to the receiving bay, and I'll run it
out to where I'm needed on the floor.
I would usually start in the bulk area, stocking the large paper items.
The thing I like most about working at H-E-B: it has given me an element of freedom.
I'm doing something on my own, and that's something I hardly ever do.
PEDRO: What is special about Daniel as a night stocker?
He's special because all our partners are special.
He's actually an excellent stocker.
He has great attributes for a stock person. He's very reliable, great attendance,
great work ethic, and he's just an excellent hire for us.
DANIEL: Working has changed my life quite a bit.
Being my first job, I was actually surprised
at my own ambition. I had never seen myself as very driven,
but now I'm surprising myself by being so eager to come in and work.
PEDRO: I think it's a great opportunity for H-E-B or any company out there to support our society
by hiring all individuals that have an ability to contribute to the workforce.
DANIEL: H-E-B is a tremendous support. I got a birthday card from H-E-B, and
I didn't tell anybody, you know, I was having a birthday.
I sort of just, fit right in with the crew I work
with. Everybody is very accepting.
PEDRO: Teaming up with DARS is really helped us to get that word out and have a
program out in place where we can get the word out to let people know that
"Hey, H-E-B is hiring, and we've got a job for you."
DANIEL: I would like to thanks DARS. So many times, I've had people who are astounded by improvement
that they see in me. DARS has backed me 100 percent, whatever I wanted to do. I've changed my
goals many times, and DARS has been behind me and, accepting the changes and,
moving along with them and propelling me forward toward them.

MITCH: I have really been happy working here. I've got a good salary.
I'm able to support my family and I really hope
that I can move up through H-E-B.
What I do, when I got this job for distribution, is I bring in the pallets.
Specifically, I line those up and then I break everything
down and I put them where they belong.
Then I open up the boxes and I put those on
the shelves until everything is gone.
Then I clean up, and that's what I do.
When DARS contacted H-E-B's staff they wanted to know about the process of interviewing
for a person who is deaf. Well DARS took care of that for them.
So they asked me also to help them with that process,
and have that experience for the interview.
CARMEN: I was the interviewer in our mock interview process and the way that flourished
was DARS really put together with Andrea Hardeman, another recruiter for the company, questions
that we already utilized but really wanted to get the perception from individuals with
disabilities to see if there was anything that we could actually help to modify
to make that process even more seamless.
ANDREA: So Mitchell actually went through the mock interview process,
and during the mock interview process he mentioned that he had an IT degree,
and he handled himself very well in the interview process, and he connected
well to our culture - what we were looking for. And so we actually were looking for a
night stocker position and he was interested in starting in that area.
CARMEN: Having a job for Mitchell or even myself, I know that it's able to give individuals
self-esteem, ability to give back and be a contributing member of the community.
ANDREA: Mitchell is very positive and very determined and focused and has accomplished
many great things. One of the things I admire about him as well is the fact not just his
drive and determination, but the fact he is willing to do what's necessary to get to
his ultimate goal. So right now he's a night stocker, but hopefully we'll start seeing
some progression in his career path.
MITCH: Now DARS is very important because
they help people who are deaf or any other people with disabilities.
You know, without them maybe most of them wouldn't be able
to go to college. They couldn't afford college,
or they wouldn't have the ability to find a job. And with DARS they help us find jobs,
or go to school and make everything possible.
ANDREA: DARS is absolutely amazing to work with and
I'm thankful that they exist. I'm thankful that we
have associations out there that are being the
liaison that are bridging the gap for a segment of our community that just needs a chance.
And so thank you DARS for what you're doing.
Keep up the good work and we'll keep partnering with you.
MITCH: I want to say thank you to DARS for helping me,
and I hope that you keep on going, and do a whole lot more in the future.
I encourage you to help people who are deaf and people with disabilities.
And I also want to thank H-E-B for letting me find this job
and I really appreciate making my life easier.
