THIS FLOOR WAS JUST KIND OF PATCHED IN AND REALLY WEAK.
AND BRING OUT SOME OF THE FANTASTIC DETAIL
THAT'S BEEN COVERED BY YEARS OF GRIME.
NOTHING GETS IN THESE LITTLE, TINY GROUT LINES
BETTER THAN A USED TOOTHBRUSH.
WE'RE MOVING RIGHT ALONG,
BUT IT NEVER FAILS TO HAVE SOMETHING GO WRONG.
I JUST STOPPED TO PUMP GAS, AND MY CREDIT CARD GETS STUCK.

IT WAS IN TERRIBLE SHAPE WHEN WE BEGAN.
THE FLOORS WERE COVERED IN DIRT,
THE WALLS WERE CRUMBLING,
AND THE OUTSIDE WAS JUST SCARY-LOOKING.
SO WE GAVE THE EXTERIOR A MUCH-NEEDED MAKEOVER.
THEN WE MOVED INSIDE
WHERE WE PUT IN ALL NEW PLUMBING AND ELECTRICAL
AND RESTORED THE UPSTAIRS BATHROOM AND KITCHEN UNIT.
NEXT ON THE LIST, THE FRONT ENTRYWAY
AND GETTING STARTED ON THE TWO LIVING ROOMS.
WHEN WE FIRST STARTED THIS PROJECT,
THIS ENTRYWAY WAS JUST ATROCIOUS.
THE PLASTER'S CRUMBLING. THE FLOOR IS A MESS.
AND THEN YOU HAVE THE MAKESHIFT WALL.
I THINK WE SHOULD GO AHEAD AND GET THIS WALL OUT OF HERE.
IT'S JUST A PIECE OF CEDAR.
AND THEN THIS ENTRYWAY'S CORRECT AGAIN. HAVE YOU SEEN THIS--

SOMETHING ALONG THIS SORT,
BECAUSE ALL THE GAS VALVES ARE ON IT STILL.
I JUST CAN'T IMAGINE THEY HAD TO ADJUST A FLAME EVERY DAY.
I ALWAYS WANT AN ICE CREAM WHEN I SEE THOSE.
THESE ALWAYS JUST SEEM TOO SIMPLE.

RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROOM.
THE ONLY WAY TO FIX THIS IS
TO BE ABLE TO PATCH IT IN WITH SOME OF THE SAME STOCK WOOD.
I'VE COME UP WITH A SOLUTION.
THERE'S NOT ENOUGH GOOD BOARDS IN THE FLOOR UPSTAIRS

TO PIECE TOGETHER IN THE DOWNSTAIRS UNIT.
THE THING IS, WITH TONGUE AND GROOVE,
YOU WANT TO BE REALLY CAREFUL WHEN YOU REMOVE IT.
YOU WANT TO SAVE THE TONGUE AND THE GROOVE,
AND IF YOU JUST WHIP THESE THINGS OUT,
THEY'RE NOT GONNA BE USABLE.

IT'S ACTUALLY ALL CHUNKED OUT IN UNEVEN SPACES.

ONE OF THE COOLEST PIECES OF THIS FIREPLACE
IS THAT THE ORIGINAL TILE'S STILL HERE.
I CAN SEE THAT I HAVE ALL THIS FILM
WHICH HAS BUILT UP ON IT.
SO IF I JUST SPRAYED, IT'S NOT GONNA TAKE THIS OFF,
SO I ALWAYS USE A COMBINATION OF A RAZOR BLADE
AND THEN YOU GET A HARD BRISTLE BRUSH.
DON'T USE A WIRE BRUSH ON TILE. IT SCRATCHES.
YOU CAN USE ANY KIND OF CLEANER YOU WANT ON THIS.
UH, ACTUALLY, LIKE, DISH SOAP AND WATER IS PERFECT.
ANYTHING THAT'S KIND OF A GREASE ELIMINATOR.
NOTHING GETS IN THESE LITTLE, TINY GROUT LINES
BETTER THAN A TOOTHBRUSH.
THIS SHOULD ALL BE GOOD.
THIS SIDE IS REALLY, REALLY NOTICEABLE
THAT I'M MISSING FOUR PIECES,
SO I'M GONNA GO FOR A SEARCH AND SEE IF I CAN FIND 'EM.

YOU GIVE THIS BOTTOM HERE A BIG BOOT WITH YOUR KNEE
AND IT STRETCHES THE CARPET AND, UH, KEEPS IN IT PLACE.
THERE'S SOME ARGUMENT OF WHETHER OR NOT
THE FIREPLACE CAN BE CLEANED UP.
(man) SINCE THE TILE WAS LAID, WE DON'T GET THE CLEARANCE.

IT JUST KIND OF MAKES IT LOOK CLEAN AND FRESH.
IT STILL LOOKS BRAND-NEW,
BECAUSE IT'S BEEN HIDDEN BEHIND THE WALLS FOR ALL THESE YEARS.
SINCE WE ADDED THE TILE IN THE FRONT ENTRYWAY,
THE DOOR DOESN'T OPEN OR SHUT NOW.
IT'S HIGHER THAN THE ORIGINAL OPENING,
SO WE DON'T GET THE CLEARANCE THAT WE HAD HERE,
BECAUSE THIS WAS CUT TO THE ORIGINAL FLOOR.
WE HAVE TO POP THE HINGES OUT IN ORDER TO GET THE DOOR OUT
SO THAT WE CAN CUT THE BOTTOM SO IT'LL OPEN.

WELL, THAT'S ONE WAY TO GET ME TO STOP SPENDING MONEY.

WE'RE A FEW STEPS AWAY FROM FINISHING THIS ROOM.
THE WALLS ARE DONE.
WE'RE FINALLY GETTING TO STAINING THE FLOORS,
AND IT'S LOOKING SO MUCH BETTER THAN IT DID.
♪♪
WE'RE ONE STEP CLOSER TO THIS PROJECT BEING COMPLETE.
SO GONE IS THE 1970s PANELING
AND THE LITTLE TINY BIT OF BASE MOLDING.
THIS ROOM WAS ORIGINALLY A BEDROOM.
IT'S NOW THE SITTING ROOM FOR THE UPSTAIRS APARTMENT.
SO IT WAS VERY IMPORTANT THAT IT HAD SOME CHARACTER OF ITS OWN,
AND NOW WHEN YOU WALK IN, YOU SEE THE ELEGANCE OF IT.
WE HAD A BIT OF ORIGINAL FLOORING
THAT WE WERE ABLE TO SAVE.
WE UNCOVERED THE BRICK, WHICH WAS GREAT,
JUST KIND OF LEFT IT PLAIN,
A BIT OF SCRAPING, CLEANING UP, SEALING IT.
IT'S JUST A LITTLE ADDED DETAIL IN THIS ROOM.
WE'VE ADDED THE NEW TRIM THAT MATCHED THE REST OF THE HOUSE.
I REALLY WANTED A CHANDELIER LOOK IN THIS ROOM,
SO FINDING A SALVAGED LIGHT,
ADDED SOME REALLY COOL EDISON BULBS TO IT,
AND NOW WE HAVE THIS GREAT LOOK IN HERE,
SOME VERY DRAMATIC DETAILS.
LOVE THE BLACK VELVET WALLPAPER.
IN THIS ROOM, IT WORKS.
IT'S DEFINITELY GIVEN THE APPEAL AND THE LOOK OF A UNIQUE SPACE.
NOW IT LOOKS LIKE THE SITTING ROOM
OF A VERY OLD HOME.
THE ENTRYWAY, GOING FROM WHERE WE STARTED
TO WHERE WE ARE NOW, I LOVE THIS SPACE.
THE STAIRS-- A QUICK SANDING, POLISHING,
AND ADDING THE RUNNER WENT A LONG WAY.
WITH THE WALLS, WE PUT UP NEW SHEETROCK
AND PUT A WARM, WELCOMING COLOR IN HERE.
THE FLOORS-- WE ADDED THE NEW TILE.
EVERYTHING NOW IS JUST GLEAMING
AND BRIGHT AND WELCOMING,
AND IT JUST LOOKS GRAND.
THAT WAS OUR SOLE PURPOSE, AND THAT'S WHAT WE'VE DONE.
NEXT TIME ON "REHAB ADDICT"...
YOU KNOW, THIS KITCHEN'S NOT ORIGINAL. I'D GUT IT.
