NARRATOR: Haywood Community College's Professional Crafts program
was created in recognition of the Southern Appalachian Region's strong craft heritage.
The program's goal is to be a place where students not only master the technical basics of their craft
but also learn the necessary skills to establish a viable craft business.
This approach to craft education was the first of its kind in the country
The fiber program immerses the students in the process of making cloth.
During each step of the process, there are decisions to make
about materials, techniques, designs, and the finished object.
Fiber students learn how to critically analyze each of these steps
to produce a work that is uniquely their own.
The textiles that are produced are as individual as the students who make them.
No experience is necessary to join the Professional Crafts program at HCC
Class sizes are small, and the opportunities after graduation are great.
Students can open their own craft business,
work with other crafters in existing businesses,
or transfer to four-year universities to continue their studies.
