Hello my name is Jessica Joseph-Davy and I study Media and Culture studies at Kingston
University. The particular reason why I chose to study at Kingston was as I’d studied
media in college and school I wasn’t sure if I wanted to still study media or do something
different, and then when I saw the degree course and, you know, what it entailed I was
like, yeah sign me up, this is where I want to be.
The particular aspect of the course that I enjoy is that it’s such a well-rounded course.
I’ll be leaving this degree and I’ll just be prepared to do anything, so the world is
my oyster, that’s why I love this course. I did study media at school and it’s different
and it was different to Kingston because it was very much focussed on industry practices
and theories that were very much concentrated on media rather than cultural studies.
The resources that are available to me at Kingston, for instance, are the LRC [Learning
Resource Centre] which is the library, it has, you know, it has a wide range of DVD’s
and books, of course, but it also has an e-book catalogue so, you know, it’s like you can
read books on your computers at home which is great. And then there’s the Mac lab which
is very useful for our practical projects which is always a great big help.
My plans for when I graduate is that I’m going to be leaving the UK for a year and
a half to do teaching in South Africa and then afterwards I’ll be coming back and
I’m not sure if I want to do more travelling or do an MA here.
In the first year you get more contact hours with your teacher and then as you progress
through it gets less and less. However it’s actually really easy to get in touch, to get
in contact with the professors and a lot of them really go above and beyond to, kind of,
make sure that you’re okay, you know, you’ll email them at, you know, ungodly hours of
the morning and they’ll reply back, so they’re pretty reliable.
