KING CHARLES III is a new future history drama which will feature future versions of
Prince William, Kate and the Royal Family.
The groundbreaking drama is based on the 2014 play of the same name and imagines what might
happen when Prince Charles ascends to the throne following the Queens death.
A constitutional crisis is sparked when the new King refuses to sign a controversial bill
into law, with riots on the streets and a tank in front of Buckingham Palace.
Written in blank verse, King Charles III examines the monarchy both as an establishment and
as a family.
The original play features the ghost of Princess Diana, who appears to Charles and William
promising that each will be the greatest King of all.
Meanwhile, Prince Harry embarks on a new romance with a republican who is caught up in the
centre of a sex scandal.
The BBC have not confirmed whether these plot lines will be included in the new adaptation
however an actress bearing a striking resemblence to Diana has been spotted filming.
Charlotte Riley will play an older version of the Duchess of Cambridge.
The Peaky Blinders star said: Im really excited to come on board King Charles III.
Its such a unique project, to be both modern and rich in verse and to play someone who
is real but yet totally re-imagined for this story, is an exciting prospect for an actor.
Kate is a really interesting woman, particularly within the context of this play, and it is
a challenge I am really looking forward to. She will be joined by many of the same cast
as the original West End play, including Oliver Chris as Prince William and Richard Goulding
as Prince Harry.
Tim Pigott-Smith will reprise the title role of King Charles.
He said: Performing in Mike Bartletts astonishing play in London and New York has
been one of the high points of my career.
I am thrilled that we are to film it it is a drama about us, now, who we are, and
the relevance of our monarchy.
Television gives it an important democratic voice. Rounding out the cast, Margot Leicester
will return as Camilla with Adam James as invented Prime Minister Tristram Evans.
Rupert Goold, who directed the play, will helm the film which has been adapted by the
original playwright Mike Bartlett.
The film will air sometime in 2017.
Filming is currently underway in Leeds, but the BBC are yet to confirm an exact air date.
