I have ADHD combined with anxiety.
I've had
fibromyalgia since I was a child probably.
I'm having some
difficulty with my vision,
my eyes get very tired.
They got a hydralic desk for me
because of the accessibility issues. It's just a desk that goes higher than the actual desks in the classrooms so that my wheelchair can fit underneath.
Tutoring was one thing
that I was able to take advantage of.
I ended up getting an A
in that class and I had
really worried that I was going to fail it.
I was really grateful for notetaking
just in case
I missed something, or whatever, for midterms and it was helpful.
Kurzweil is a program that
they're able to put on your computer
and it's
called Alternate Format Text
for your textbooks.
And what does, it changes your text books on the computer
and then therefore
it can read them to you.
So for people like myself who do better on
oral instruction,
then you can listen to your textbooks rather than having to read them and lose your place.
I was having a lot of trouble
keeping up with all of reading and
it was suggested that I could use Kurzweil,
and that
if I could get used to the monotone voice in it
and some of the pronunciation,
that it may be helpful because then I could just sit back, close my eyes, and listen
to what is in the textbook.
And that's been a tremendous help for me. For other things,
like there's a program called Dragon
which is a dictation
where you dictate your papers to it
and it writes it for you, and then you can go back and edit it.
Exam Accommodations were really helpful for me
because you are able to get them in
a quiet room, a quiet space to write your test. And you were able to
get extra time if you needed it.
With the test centre, they offer
accommodations for you. They have rooms if you
have ADD or ADHD and need to be in a room by yourself.
They also have an area with
just desks, and they have an area with computers
so you can have different things. For myself, because my tests get read to me on Kurzweil,
I'm in a room alone
and it reads my tests to me.
It actually helps a lot. My test marks have increased probably forty to fifty percent.
I actually found it really easy to arrange a meeting
with
a Disability Services Coordinator. At the first meeting, we talked about
accommodations and
funding to get into
the College, and my student loan.
And I remember talking about
the accommodations that they had for me, and
the individualized service plan.
