Today I will be making jaljeera.
Jaljeera is a very refreshing drink.
Best way to describe jaljeera, Indian flavored lemonade.
This is a very popular summer drink in India.
This recipe will serve 4.
For this recipe we need:
1/4 cup of packed, chopped mint leaves (pudina)
1/4 cup of packed, chopped cilantro (hara dhania)
3 tablespoons of freshly squeezed lemon juice
2 tablespoons of sugar, adjust to your taste.
1 tablespoon chopped ginger (adrak)
1 tablespoon of roasted, powdered cumin seed (bhuna jeera)
1 teaspoon of salt
1 teaspoon of black salt (kala namak) also known as rock salt.
This is actually pinkish grey in color and has a very pungent smell.
You can find these in Indian grocery store.
1 tablespoon of tamarind seedless.
You can find these also in Indian grocery store.
Pinch of asafoetida (hing)
This is available in Indian grocery store.
4 cups of water
Approximately 1 cup of ice.
Jaljeera is a very easy drink to make.
Blend all the spices into paste.
Strain it and mix the paste with the water.
Serve over the ice.
To make jaljeera
first I will blend all the ingredients together.
Cilantro
Mint
Lemon juice
Roasted cumin seeds powder
Ginger
Sugar
Salt
Black salt
Tamarind
And asafoetida (hing).
I think I will add couple of spoons of water.
So that will make it easy to blend.
Shake it again.
Open it and check it out.
This looks really nice.
Let’s put about 1/4 cup of water.
Blend just for a few seconds.
This looks nice.
And now we are going to strain it.
Strain the spice mix.
Squeeze all the water.
Spice mix has a very nice aroma, especially the mint.
Squeeze all the water out.
This is looking good.
And we can discard this leftover.
So add the water to the spice mix
to make it about 4 cups.
Jaljeera is ready to be served.
I like to serve this with ice.
So few pieces of ice.
And then pour the jaljeera over.
And garnish it with few pieces of mint.
Looking great.
Jaljeera is a nice cooling summer drink.
My mother used to make jaljeera in hot summer days.
I have many great memories of drinking jaljeera.
Enjoy.
Thank you.
