Sleeve gastrectomy is a weight loss surgery where we remove approximately 75 percent of
your stomach. We essentially make your stomach from the size of a football to the size of
a banana.
And so, this weight loss surgery works for two reasons. One, obviously you're able to
eat much less because your stomach is much smaller. The other reason why this surgery
works so well is because the part of your stomach that we're removing makes hormones
that make us hungry. So, by removing those hormones or decreasing them, our hunger is
actually much less.
You can expect to lose approximately 70 percent of your excess body weight after the first
year or so of surgery. This averages out to about three to four pounds per week. The nice
thing about the sleeve gastrectomy is that many patients say that they're still able
to eat a wide variety of foods, just in much smaller quantities. The other thing that patients
tell us is that they actually need to remind themselves to eat because they really just
aren't hungry. They're very excited about the weight loss. They're able to do things
in life that they weren't able to do before. And they don't feel like they're being deprived
of food that they normally like to eat.
Another great advantage of the sleeve gastrectomy or gastric sleeve is that because we're not
touching or rerouting your intestines, there's no risk of malabsorption. Meaning that you
don't need to take many protein supplements or a lot of vitamin supplements for life afterwards.
We do ask that you take a multivitamin and Vitamin B12, but usually you're able to get
most of the nutrients in the food that you're able to eat.
That's a little bit about the sleeve gastrectomy.
