(Dr. Pearson). Let's give them another
round of applause, wow!
[audience applause].
Good afternoon!
And welcome to the Academic Thriving Through Teamwork Fair.
H. Jackson Brown asserts, "Even when you play the game of
your life, it's the feeling of teamwork that you'll remember."
"You'll forget the plays, the shots, and the scores,
but you'll never forget your teammates."
Today, it is all of you that I wish to cherish and remember
for being our teammates and colleagues of the
Office of Faculty Develpment.
I want to thank you in advance, every college, every dean,
every director, every chair, every faculty member,
and every staff member for touching the lives one student
at a time.
Remember, nothing important was ever achieved without someone
taking a chance.
Now I have the privelege of introducing our president.
Dr. William Perry began his second year as president
of Eastern Illinois University.
After earning his MA and PhD degrees from the University of
Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, he continued on to Texas A & M,
where he received recognition for his service in teaching
and in administration.
And following his welcome, we will hear from
Provost Blair Lord, Vice President of Academic Affairs,
who is a strong proponent of faculty develepment.
Provost Lord received his degrees from
the University of California at Davis and has been
at Eastern Illinois University since 2001.
Help me welcome our administration team
to the platform.

...for faculty to keep growing, keep growing professionally.
To learning about the field, learning about teaching,
how to engage students, how to connect the teaching
and research that you do, how to institute, if it fits my desire
to do so, service training into the curriculum of the class.
To engage the students, a fundamental in the academic
field, so when they graduate, through my work with the other
faculty, the student effort, so when they graduate, they've got
what it takes here to step out and meet the challenges of
whatever their profession is, or their graduate program,
whatever they chose.
At the same time, I hope that they learn from me to be
a scholar and to be [unclear audio].
...work with the students here as well, in the heart, help them
understand that learning is a life-long endeavor.
So I'm going to be encouraging all the faculty I meet,
whether they've been here awhile or are new, to take advantage
of all the resources of Faculty Development that's
here at Eastern.
And I think it's a very broad-based program,
a lot of good information is available, a great opportunity
for faculty to do that.
I think that faculty development is the kind of thing that will
continue the tradition of our faculty here in being leaders,
in convincing students to go on to graduate degrees,
students to become teachers and teachers of the year,
students to become Pulitzer Prize winners,
students to become fundamental members of their communities.
So I know that this isn't being recorded so we can't just repeat
it every hour for other faculty who happen to come, but it is
my pleasure to be here, and I want to thank Mildred Pearson
for all the work she's doing in Faculty Development.
And I want to thank Blair Lord for the leadership he's provided
for the past six or seven years as Provost and among those,
of course, is the building of Faculty Development,
so I'd like to hand the microphone over to Blair now
so he can say a few words of welcome as well.
Oh, and by the way, I'm not doing any karaoke at 4:30.
[audience laughter and applause].
(Provost Blair Lord). And I always take the lead
of the president, so I won't be doing any karaoke either.
I do want to welcome everybody here.
I know that there will be a lot of others coming in and out
during the afternoon.
As the president said, blessedly they're not going to get this
looped, so only you get to hear it today.
But I do want to welcome everybody who's here.
As I said the other day during a welcome to one of the other
new faculty orientation events, this is a really exciting time
of the year.
It's an exciting time of the year because we're starting,
it's an exciting to be at Eastern right now because
of all the new things going on here at Eastern.
From the opening of our new Fine Arts Center and all the
opportunities that brings to our faculty, to our students,
to the opportunity to try to flesh out the president's
vision, articulate as being the best in the nation at
integrating the academic and personal development
of our students.
We have lots of opportunities to invent, to discover, to amplify,
things to enhance the educational opportunities,
and I know that we'll have an exciting year doing that.
So, again, welcome for being here, and I'll turn this
back to Mildred.
Thank you.
