Relationship intelligence is
a capacity or an array of skills and abilities that enable the fulfilment
of productive relationships with other people. Relationship intelligence might
be hard for some people
because maybe they're not as self-aware in terms of
understanding how their emotions are influencing the way in which they engage
with others
and so emotional regulation is sometimes
a challenge. It really matters in business because we need to get things done
through and with other people
it's, it's very challenging in business to do things in isolation.
The reality of today's business environment
is requiring us to work with an array of...
people from different ethnic backgrounds,
different diversity. in terms of academic, professional disciplines,
and, in fact, we need to work with a whole host
of people in order to really achieve effective action
in organizational life. The ability to
integrate our thinking and emotional skills
at the same time, can really drive
really interesting results for us because there is a strong connection and
inter-relationship that exists between thinking and emotions.
We can use our thinking to regulate emotions
and our emotions influence the way in which we think.
So, there's this dynamic interaction that takes place between
our thinking and our emotional skills and abilities, and activities
that exist. So when we can look at the relationship between those two
great things can happen. I would suggest there's a lot of benefits to learning
relationship intelligence. One, it would be in terms of maximizing
our own potential as human beings and as business professionals
another one would be in terms of enhancing the quality of
our connections with others. When we can enhance
the relationship that exists between ourselves and our colleagues,
our bosses, our customers, then that supports our success
in achieving the business goals that we're all striving to attain.
Leadership would be a great example of an area that can really benefit from
relationship intelligence.
When you really think about it, leadership
is about a leader being in relation to other people. We cannot lead without
others
and in leadership, what we're doing is really building and enhancing the
relationships
of our direct reports and we're also trying to inspire our direct reports to build
constructive relationships
with those that they manage and they lead throughout the organization as well.
A sure sign of a leader with relationship intelligence
is one where you can see their ability to power up their empathy.
Just imagine how challenging it will be for a leader
to really be effective, if they have... don't have the ability to emotionally tune
in and read
the emotional landscape of others. So,
a great way to drive effective leadership is to power up your
relationship intelligence
and a key aspect of that would be your ability to tune into
empathy and to utilize that skill to drive more effective leadership.
