PSA Peugeot Citroën Professionals Automotive Designer (Exterior)
My name's Nicolas,
I've been an automotive designer with PSA Peugeot Citroën since 1994.
First of all, an automotive designer has to make people dream,
and bring to the designs a lot of sensuality, originality and modernity;
basically create a project that makes people want to have the most beautiful car possible in their garage.
The main skill required for an automotive stylist is to stay one step ahead.
Looking forward means dreaming, innovating with strong designs,
and the capacity to bring a sense of the future
or modernity to a design that's going to be immediately recognised as such.
We create a form, we draw these seductive designs,
then they are chosen as a style theme.
These style themes are then digitalized,
working together with a 3D designer on the CAD (Computer Assisted Design).
After that we make a contour-milled model
and that is the full-sized model of that particular design.
From there we work with the design in 3D with the 3D designer in the workshop,
a real sculptor in fact,
so we can see what works and doesn't work in the proportions of the design.
We develop the style
and go back and forth between the CAD and the workshop,
going back to the original drawings to find details,
and to develop the style as much as possible.
Trust is the key when you're working in a partnership.
It's important to anticipate where the other person wants to go,
to be able to compromise a bit too, and exchange ideas.
The main thing is really to be able to communicate well
so that the project moves along quickly and that it gets better each time.
