Hi, I'm Alex MacRae a social dynamics instructor on behalf of expertvillage.com, I'm here today
to talk to you about picking up women at bars and clubs. Buying drinks for a girl, yes or
no. It's a tricky debate and there are a lot of different ways to see it. One thing that
buying a drink conveys and which a lot of guys associate with buying a drink, is conveying
a provider personality. In other words, a guy that buys a drink proves that he has the
means to buy a girl a drink. But, the down side of this is that you have to ask yourself,
would I be buying a drink if it was just me and my buddy. In other words, the subtext,
the subcommunication, what you're saying without saying it when you buy a drink, might be,
hey would you spend five minutes with me if I buy you a drink. In other words if you're
trading the drink for time with a girl, it's subcommunicating weakness. Ask yourself, will
you ever buy a drink for a buddy, just so you can talk to him for a few minutes, of
course not. You two could have a great conversation just sipping waters the entire night. So remember,
when considering buying a drink for a girl ask yourself what it means. It might mean
that you know the best particular drink and this particular venue, maybe you've been going
there for years and they have a certain drink on the menu that's special there or that you
particularly like. Or, that this girl, being from out of town or maybe even from a different
country, something that this girl has never had, a drink that's new to her. By buying
her this drink it conveys that you know your own home turf. You know what's going on in
your backyard, you know the venue and you know what's good there. So remember, when
buying a drink, ask yourself, is this something I would do with a guy friend and what are
the different interpretations, and what the different subcommunications that buying a
drink says. Thanks for watching.
