Good afternoon, I am Paul Spencer the Minister Counselor for Agriculture here at the U.S.
Embassy in Berlin. Thank you very much for your questions regarding organic produce and
the T-TIP negotiations.
The United States constitutes the largest market for organic produce in the world. Europe
is the second largest.
Recently the United States and the European Union signed an equivalence agreement for
the trade of organic products.
In general, products certified as “bio” in Germany may be sold as “organic” in
the United States and vice versa.
This arrangement reduces the burden of certification and paperwork required by German organic producers
wishing to export to the United States.
A successful T-TIP would further lower tariffs and non-tariff barriers for the trade of food
and agriculture including organic products.
Thank you very much for your attention and interest and if you have the chance purchase
some American organic produce.
