>> [ANCHOR]: Alright, more political posts are popping up on Facebook and rightly so
with election now just a few weeks away. So if you're getting tired of perhaps seeing
all those posts and you want to filter them out, just for a little while, we’re here
to help. Jennifer is joining us right now with social media expert Mike Johansson, with
some tips. Hello Jen.
>> [REPORTER]: Hi there yeah. We're going over some of the things we are already beginning
to see pop up. Mike was saying the last hour, we were wondering what are some of the big
phrases that have come out? We begin to see a little bit overnight, but it's really not
until a little later in the morning that we really see the real explosion of what was
coming out. But we just saw, Norma you might like this one, the whole binder comment, the
Patrick Swayze one and what did it just say?
>> [MIKE]: No one puts baby in a binder.
>> (LAUGHS)
>> [ANCHOR]: I love that!
>> [REPORTER]: It's a good one right? Alright, we want to mention again how to maybe like
your friends and maybe like their posts, you know maybe ninety percent of the year, but
maybe right now that you don't want to hear all their conspiracy theories and all that
their opinions on politics in general. He's gonna show how you can block someone in the
short term. And my question is, as we do this do they know you've done this?
>> [MIKE]: No they don't.
>> [REPORTER]: Ok, muting them in a friendly way.
>>[MIKE]: True, you're not telling them to get lost.
>> [REPORTER]: Alright, show us how.
>> [MIKE]: Right inside the post, you see a little arrow. You go "hide." It's now hidden.
You get this little thing. "Change updates." So "All Updates." Now we're hiding all updates
from this person.
>> [REPORTER]: So she won't come up at all?
>> [MIKE]: She won't come up in your feed now. So the thing to remember is. I've got
a few people I've done this to, none of them in Rochester I should say. But I just have
to remember that after the election is over, I have to go back in and add them back in.
>> Let's do that because we don't want to leave anyone hanging here. And again for someone
who isn't technically savvy or shall I say, unsay as I am, I need this other part of it
because otherwise they would never come back from the brink of being muted, if you would.
So we're gonna unblock your friend any type in their name.
>> So this is a business site. And I go up where it says "Liked." And there is a little
toggle here where it says, "Show in News Feed." So that's another way to do it. You can toggle
it on or you can toggle it off. That's another way to do it. But actually for most people
it's easiest to do it the news feed because that's where you get annoyed. You're annoyed
in the moment and you can take care of it right there.
>> Let's talk about Twitter. I'll be honest, it's not my forte. Sometimes I don't want
to follow someone because you get overwhelmed, but there's a way to categorize and maybe
make it a little more manageable.
>> Sure. So the big challenge is that everyone thinks it's like a big fire hose. If you're
following 500 people, you're getting updates from 500 people. But you don't have to tolerate
that. You can organize people by lists. For example, I have a Rochester list, I have an
RIT list because that's where I teach. There's a social media list, public relations list.
And I can go in Twitter and just have that list display. Which if there are a lot of
people doing a lot of public stuff, just don't put them on a list.
>> Gotcha. That's something you can do on a desktop. Not something you can do on a mobile
phone necessarily?
>> No, you can. It's kind of clunky on mobile because it's a small screen. But there are
applications you can download to your computer. One is called HootSuite. The other is called
TweetDeck. We discussed why I have to spell that out.
>> With his accent. Deck, TweetDeck.
>> And those things allow you to organize the streams coming in. They also allow you
to organize the way you sync things up, but that's for another day.
>> We still have that up. Maybe we can see what it looks like.
>> Another thing that I mentioned is called TweetGrid. And this is the way I followed
the debate last night. It entered up here, hash tag debate2012, hash tag debates and
hash tag decision2012. So anyone who sent a tweet with that hash tag phrase in it, shows
up here in real time.
>> So how do you do that? Do you go to TweetGrid.com or is that something you need to download?
>> No this is just a website. This is TweetGrid.com.
>> Ok, so that is when you put in the hash tags. Just again explaining what this hash
tag thing is all about.
>> So I can change this one again to
>> How about binder?
>> Sure, that's a good idea.
>> Haha, hash tag binder.
>> Binders full of women, binders full of single ladies, nobody puts baby in a binder,
hilarious. Yes, so lots of discussion around binders.
>> Yes, so definitely a manageable way. It's like a fire hose, you have so many people
and how do you manage it all coming in. It's just hard to wrap your mind around. So probably
better on a desktop because on a mobile phone I guess that would get really small. We need
to save our eyesight.
>> And you can do it. You just need to be patient and flip between lists and screens.
>> And this is one of those instances where those hash tags can really become user friendly.
>> Sure, absolutely. And for example, a bunch of journalism students at RIT were live tweeting
for the debate. And so they had, VoteRIT as the hash tag. So you could see what these
journalism students students are saying about what each side has said, how the questioning
was going, how people were reacting. So that was one way to follow the debate.
>> Now I get it. I've been waiting for someone to take my hand and say Jennifer this is how
it works. You've done it. Thank you very much. Norma, it makes sense now finally. I can join
this whole hash tag thing. I finally get it.
>> [ANCHOR]: Hash tags are great because they organize the whole conversation so you can
look up a lot of information in a little amount of time. But again, your blocking on Facebook
is only temporary.
>> [REPORTER]: Only temporary. A partial breakup. Hash tag backtoyou.
>> [ANCHOR]: Ok, thank you Jenn. We appreciate it and thanks so much to Mike Johansson.
>> She says hash tag thankyou.
