Water, Precious Water (Caption file)
Kenya is prone to drought , straddling the equator, 80 percent of the country is arid
or semi-arid. In recent years, the seasonal rains have become
unpredictable , so the droughts are lasting longer.
When the rains don’t come it’s a serious situation for livestock farmers.
They were losing a lot of animals, like in one month a person would lose more than 60
animals, that’s only cows, we aren’t talking about goats and sheep. So what would have
happened here with the current climatic condition the people would have lost a lot of animals.
Yeah. The National Council of Churches in Kenya
is well known for its work on water issues. In this community of Kadjiado it brought people
together to rebuilt this sand dam as well as several others in the area.
This water will last for months. And because of the work to strengthen the dam’s banks,
it will fill up and hold the water from the next rains, as well.
The National Council of Churches in Kenya will continue to monitor this sand dam and
other water projects. Our Partnership with the National Council is made possible by your
donations to the Mission and Service of The United Church of Canada.
Thank you and please continue to give so our partners can continue to do their critical
work.
