Nurse LaPorte: and I’m Theresa LaPorte.
We’re school nurses with the Frederick County Health Department.
We’re here today to talk about sun health & sun safety.
We can all have more fun in the sun without the burn,
as long as we're sun aware and sun safe.
Chris: Doesn’t the sun benefit us as well?
Nurse LaPorte: Yes, the sun provides a lot of positive needs for all-
such as its warmth, light, vitamin D,
and that it is necessary for the growth and development
of all living organisms.
There are also negative effects of having too much sun,
such as sunburn, damage to the skin, skin cancer,
eye damage, and premature aging.
Elizabeth: Is there such a thing as a "healthy tan"?
Nurse O’Connell: No, there is no such thing as a "healthy tan".
Cordarrin: What do the experts say about tanning beds?
Nurse LaPorte: Exposure to tanning beds and sun lamps
are now listed as a “human carcinogen”, and a precursor to skin cancer.
Olivia: What can we do to be "sun safe"?
Nurse LaPorte: Stay in the shade between the hours of 10 AM-4PM.
Re-apply sunscreen every two hours and more often if in the water.
Avoid long exposures in water,
as the sun’s rays are reflected deeper in the water.
Nurse O’Connell: So before you start on that “perfect tan”…
take a good look at a raisin. That could be you!
