I'm Mirjam and I joined Candoco in May 2011
so from the first moment that I started to get to know Candoco, I always felt like they were not just interest in me as a dancer
but in me as a person, and I felt that actually opened up the space for me to explore creativity in a different way
and to be more myself in the audition process and on stage that's still what I feel really sets Candoco apart
and what really interests me in working with them
I'm particularly looking forward to going to perform at the Tanz Congress in Dusseldorf this year
because I know that's a fantastic platform for Europe, and for Germany especially, and then also the
festival in Utrecht in Holland, it's going to be a great week there, also teaching I think as well
And then I think another highlight is the work that we are going to be doing with Thomas Hauert
and to explore more elements of improvisation with the company, and then making work together in this new group
the performance at the Wellcome Trust was a fantastic opportunity for us to steer away from the set repertory and dive into improvisation
and that was very liberating for us, and then the other element was that it was site specific work
so we were very close to the audience that were there in the museum in that moment
for me site-specific work really breaks down the boundaries between the performative space and the auditorium on the other side
it brings the performers right to where the audience is, to a space that is much more connected to
everyday life and thus really close to the individual spectator
and your performance starts to be totally influenced by what's happening in that space and that moment
what's happening with that person in that space in that moment, and that's a great source of inspiration
and also connecting between the performers and the audience
I love being really close with the audience, I love being so close so they can see me sweat and I can hear them breathe
and it's almost something tactile, because it gives a whole other dimension to the presence
and to how you can connect to the people that are around you
and then there was nothing to hide behind, there was no structured movement
or choreography, but you were just there
in the moment with somebody else really close
and what happens then and that's something that I find really interesting and really valuable
