Hello, my name is Jeremy Daunay, I am 28 years old and I come from Brittany, France.
I arrived in Australia 5 years ago
I first had a Working Holiday Visa for one year, and then obtained a V.I.E. visa (2 year program for young professionals sponsored by the French government).
I created my 1st company in 2009 and a 2nd one in 2012, both dedicated to launching, importing and distributing innovative products from French SMEs
I am also in charge of the former V.I.E. network in Australia, a position I have been holding since the end of my V.I.E assignment.
What are, according to you, the business opportunities in Australia ?
Based on the obvious fact that Australia is an Island and on my own experience, I will say that every new products and services from overseas have to be imported by someone
There are a lot of opportunities for those wishing to import and launch new products and services.
If you find a product which is not available in Australia,
You can either try to launch it is via the existing retail and distribution networks
or you can decide to start a business around it and launch it yourself.
A last word ?
I am often contacted by young French graduates willing to come to Australia using the V.I.E. program
Rather than trying to find an opportunity here in Australia, I advice them to find a company in France who could be interested in penetrating the market down under,
I encourage them to promote the V.I.E program as a valuable tool to export
and make French Businesses aware of how they could make the most of their potential in Australia.
Don't hesitate to build and a budget a business plan over 12, 24 or 36 months, integrating the V.I.E. program as a tool to create export opportunities and present it to businesses in France
Multiply your chances by creating the project in France rather than coming here to find one
About Entrepreneurship, my advice would be to start as prepared as possible and to gather as much advice and feedback as possible from more experienced entrepreneurs
I have mentors, whose advice are priceless, I consult them as often as possible
and this is not just applicable for Australia.
Regarding Australia in particular, if you are driven and motivated, make sure you are well prepared and advised and give it a go
but don't be fulled by a so called "Eldorado"
There are opportunities in Australia but not for everyone
If you don't tick all the boxes in terms of skills, you can find yourself facing difficulties
Many come to Australia with very high expectations and end up disappointed,
thinking that everything will be easy here, but it is not as easy as it may seem at first
Australia as a country can afford to be very selective regarding the people it lets in
I don't want to discourage people to come, I simply wish to inform them. Be well prepared and well advised prior to making the move in order not to be disappointed
