Ok, the first thing we want to do is before we go out on the ice we want to become familiar
with the landscape we want to actually scout the area the we are going to be fishing in.
We want to get an idea of the body, the size of the body of water and the depths. By looking
at a topographical map you can see here that we have the bay that we are in it gives GPS
coordinates for instance here is 44 degrees twenty five minutes on our GPS we are sitting
at 44 degrees twenty four point 07 minutes. That tells us that we are in the southern
end of this bay near what is called a special anchorage area and we are in about eight feet
of water right here. Now you can notice that along the shoreline it will show you the different
water depths it will also show you such things as islands and shoals as well as particular
cans or nuns that are used in marking areas for boats to be returning. Now obviously there
is no boats at this time of year but this gives us a good idea of where the La Plate
River comes in and this creates a current that comes into the bay where the smelt may
run and the salmon may follow.
