The alternative spring break program just offers students the
opportunities to go on sort of a non-traditional Spring Break,
doing service, engaging in different communities around the US.
This year they went to Chicago and Black Mountain, North Carolina.
We got there pretty late the first night, but when
we woke up the first morning, we started in the community gardens,
that’s what we did most of the time, was just helping out in different
community gardens around Black Mountain, and digging beds, and
since it’s getting warmer they're starting to plant.
A lot of the community gardens did a lot of donations to their communities,
so it was good to kind of be able to contribute to that.
We also visited elementary school there the primary schools and talked about
gardening to the kids and let them plant their own little bean seeds.
So it was a really great experience.
With our trip to Chicago, we put a lot of emphasis on non-profit organizations.
We went to two different locations the first day.
We went to two different Ronald McDonald houses and when we got
there we all divided up tasks to create a meal for the families
that live there and then some of us went out and did like landscaping chores
and so the purpose of every student is kind of like to get as much out
of the event as possible, whether it’s through service learning or
just kind of figuring out what Chicago is as a city was also a great aspect.
At the end of the day you get something that you can put on a resume
that’s going to last for your entire life.
Like, my experience working with Ronald McDonald house and then
working at the soup kitchen that we went to has left a very,
marked experience on my life as something to make me grateful for what I have.
