-The largest jail facility in the county of San Bernadino is
here at the West Valley Detention Center, located at
9500 Etiwanda Avenue in the city of Rancho Cucamonga.
It's located approximately one mile north of the Interstate
10 freeway, off of Etiwanda Avenue.
The West Valley Jail houses both male and female inmates.
And you can visit inmates from Wednesday through Sunday, from
8:00 in the morning through 7:45 in the evening.
You'll need to call in advance of that
appointment, a day prior.
And you'll have to arrive approximately one half hour to
your appointment time, in order to be
screened and processed.
One of the things I appreciate about the West Valley
Detention Center, it is a modern, clean facility that is
segregated into different blocks or units.
People are segregated by the type of crimes they allegedly
have committed, so that you don't have simple
misdemeanants housed in the same block as people that have
been accused of or convicted of serious
felonies like ***.
Here at the West Valley Detention Center, the
Sheriff's department has the largest medical unit of any
facility in San Bernadino county.
There is always a doctor on staff here to provide for the
medical needs of inmates.
Recently, we experienced a problem here at the West
Valley Detention Center, where custody specialists were not
allowing attorneys to visit inmates if they weren't listed
as attorney of records.
This caused problems for individuals who are attempting
to hire our office to assist loved ones that were in
custody here at the West Valley Detention Center.
When I heard about this, I contacted the watch commander,
a person who I've known for the last 30 years from my
prior time serving in law enforcement.
Explained to him what was going on.
Advised him about A25 of the penal code that it was
unlawful to deny permission to an attorney to see an inmate,
based upon a family's request.
As a result of that phone call and subsequent investigation
by the Sheriff's department, that policy
now has been changed.
