In the latest update on the Aurora, Colorado theater shooting suspect, police have discovered
suspected killer, 24-year-old James Holmes, bought more than 6,000 rounds of ammunition
in recent months.
From NBC: “In the last 60 days he purchased four guns
at local metro gun shops and through the internet he purchased over 6,000 rounds of ammunition.”
Holmes purchased two handguns, a shotgun and a semi-automatic rifle just weeks after he
reportedly dropped out of school at the University of Colorado.
The Telegraph reports the Aurora police chief says all weapons were possessed legally. The
ease at which Holmes was able to purchase them has sparked criticism over gun laws.
The Huffington Post’s Mark Blumenthal writes, despite similar past events, gun rights legislation
is not likely to change.
“Thirteen years ago, another shooting rampage at Columbine High School...produced a brief
bump in support for stricter gun laws but that new support had eroded a year later and
ultimately gave way to a longer-term decline.”
Sky News reports authorities are having a difficult time entering his apartment to conduct
further investigations.
“Officers remain unable to enter his home having found it rigged with trick wires and
*** trapped with jars of chemicals and ammunition.”
Holmes has reportedly obtained a lawyer and will make his first court appearance Monday.
