This is Governor Steve Beshear ... About Kentucky.
February 13-19, 2011 is National Salute to Veteran Patients Week. The humanitarian organization
No Greater Love began this observation in 1974 with the Veterans Administration taking
over sponsorship in 1978. Today VA voluntary service staff hold local events and activities
at VA medical centers across the country in recognition of this week.
It’s fitting that the National Salute is observed annually during the week of Valentine's
Day because of our veterans love for their country.
Every year the nationally syndicated columnist “Ask Annie” encourages readers to send
Valentine cards and letters to hospitalized veterans at VA Medical Centers. And each year,
more than a million cards and letters are sent to VA patients during National Salute
Week.
In Kentucky, we’re fortunate to have two major Veterans Affairs Medical Centers, dozens
of VA clinics and three outstanding state veterans nursing homes to care for our 344,000
veterans.
Please join your friends, your neighbors, and community groups in honoring all veterans
by visiting hospitalized veterans this week or sending them a card or letter. Salute them
for their service and consider becoming a VA volunteer.
You can find a list of Kentucky’s VA facilities and state veterans nursing homes by visiting
the Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs website at www.veterans.ky.gov.
I hope you’ll join me in taking this opportunity to express your appreciation to our veterans.
