CULTURAL MANAGEMENT PROGRAM University of Barcelona
CULTURAL PRODUCTION Insurances and transportation of documentary heritage
Our center belongs to the Ayuntamiento de Barcelona, to the Culture Institute,
and we follow their regulations on loans.
We would obviously accept loans to any institution which could fulfill
those regulations about security in carriage and during the exhibition.
We offer access to the production institution of the documentation,
in this case, the Ayuntamiento de l'Hospitalet,
and this access could be on site consultation
or it could entail a displacement of the documentation to the local offices.
We could say that the largest diffusion of History through exhibitions
is done by the city museums.
And finally, another possibility is the delivery of original
documents of the archive for cultural diffusion.
In those cases special precautions regarding security,
provision of insurances and the certain method in which
the carriage of the documentation is done shall be taken.
The conservation specialist makes a report
to check the condition of the work and if it is able to leave the center
and come back in the same condition.
So it also depends on the conditions of the exhibition of the institution which will receive the works.
If they have 24h security service, safety devices, air conditioning, etc.,
the risk is really low, and when contracting the policy,
the premium of the insurance company is also surprisingly low in most cases.
We have some packaging to prepare
the material to leave the center and for its carriage by vehicle.
To guarantee the good state of preservation of the original work,
temperature and humidity conditions must be controlled during carriage and exhibition.
When an original work has to leave the center, if it has an operational extension of pages,
as a preventive measure we make a digital copy,
because it is the best insurance we can offer to the document.
However, this arises a problem of difficult solution:
insurances start from the consideration of a venal value of the insured good and,
documentary heritage is, by law, an alienable good.
Therefore, it is pointless to insure a document according to its economical value
because it is priceless.
