[00:00:00.20] Before we wrap up this chapter, there's one
last set of filters that I want to go through,
[00:00:04.79] because these are the ones that are most fun,
because they add a little bit of an artistic
[00:00:08.88] touch to the photos that you
work on here inside of GIMP.
[00:00:11.44] So it's located in the Filters menu, it's
down close to the bottom, it's called Artistic,
[00:00:15.69] and you have a lot of different options here.
[00:00:17.57] So, I am going to create several duplicates
of my photo, so you can see all of these different
examples.
[00:00:22.21] So I am just going to come over here, and
click the duplicate button a few times, and I am
[00:00:25.83] just going to start
running the filters on these.
[00:00:27.74] So I am going to select the first duplicate
here, and then I'll turn off the remaining ones
there.
[00:00:32.13] Then we'll go the Filters menu, and we'll
go down to Artistic, and inside of the Artistic
[00:00:37.59] set of filters, I want to go to the first
one here, which is Cartoon, and I'll launch
[00:00:41.41] it up in its own window.
[00:00:43.51] And once I have Cartoon open, I can adjust
the Mask radius, and Percent black; how much
[00:00:48.62] black I am reintroducing into this.
[00:00:51.17] And the higher this goes, the more
cartoony or hand-drawn it's supposed to look.
[00:00:54.92] If I hit OK, you can see it adds sort of
that almost like it's got an ink quality to it.
[00:01:00.15] So that's a pretty neat
little effect. All right.
[00:01:02.82] Let's turn that off, and let's go to the next
one. Filters > Artistic; another good one here
[00:01:09.28] is going to be the GIMPPressionist.
[00:01:14.21] And so inside of the GIMPPressionist section,
you can apply a lot of different things in here.
[00:01:18.81] You can apply stuff like ApplyCanvas, Ballpark,
Canvas, Crosshatch, Cubism, Dotify; let's do Cubism.
[00:01:24.53] We can also select the
paper on which it's put on.
[00:01:27.49] So let's do something like defaultpaper. Brush,
you can select the Brush, Orientation, Size,
[00:01:32.88] Placement, Color, General;
I am just going to hit OK.
[00:01:37.90] Once I do that, you are going to see it turns
it into sort of like a painting look, which is
really neat.
[00:01:43.20] Starting on the next one, go to
the Filters menu > Artistic, and Oilify.
[00:01:50.81] Oilify turns this into an oil
painting, just like it sounds.
[00:01:54.11] So the Mask size, if you crank this up, you
can see what this does when it cranks it up;
[00:01:58.03] makes everything kind of blur together. The
lower the Mask size, the more detail you preserve
in here.
[00:02:02.39] You can also set a size map
based on the layers that you create.
[00:02:06.17] In this case, I am just going to
adjust the mask-size by itself, then hit OK.
[00:02:09.94] Once I do that, it may take awhile to render,
but once it renders, you are going to see
[00:02:13.39] that it turns this into an oil painting like
effect, something kind of like that; pretty interesting.
[00:02:18.93] You can take that, and then blend it with
the original to make it look like it was sort
[00:02:21.68] of being painted or
something like that. Pretty neat.
[00:02:24.69] Turn that off. Turn the last one back on.
[00:02:26.49] Let's go back up to Filters, and let's go
into Artistic, and one of the last ones we have
here is Van Gogh.
[00:02:34.38] And so if I go into Van Gogh, you can pick
what channels are affected. In this case, I
[00:02:38.49] am going to affect the Hue. The Effect Operator,
stick with Gradient, do this with the source
[00:02:45.01] image; you can change
all these different things.
[00:02:47.31] Unfortunately, there's no preview in here,
so it's just kind of like pick and choose.
[00:02:51.35] Hit OK to see what it does, and then once
it runs, you will see the effect, and then you
[00:02:55.24] can kind of adjust accordingly. There we go.
[00:02:58.45] And so once that finishes rendering, you can
see all of the different touches that it does.
[00:03:01.77] It makes it look almost like a Van
Gogh like painting, in other words.
[00:03:05.72] And so you can undo that any time you want.
Go back in there, and you can go down to Artistic,
[00:03:10.20] and choose different settings for this.
[00:03:12.02] So Van Gogh settings, I can go back in, and
let's change this to more, Filter length,
[00:03:17.48] a little bit higher, Minimum value, crank
that down, Maximum value, crank that up, and hit
OK.
[00:03:23.35] Again, this is going to
take some time to render.
[00:03:25.62] Once it renders, though,
you'll see the results.
[00:03:27.45] Again, no preview window, which is unfortunate,
which means you are just going to have to
[00:03:30.93] kind of wait and see what your settings actually
did to your photo, but once it finishes rendering,
[00:03:35.42] you will get a pretty good idea.
[00:03:37.73] There we go, and so once that finishes rendering
there, I get a pretty good idea of exactly what I did.
[00:03:41.77] It almost gives us sort of a
dreamy look. Pretty nice; not too bad.
[00:03:45.72] And so that's the Van Gogh.
[00:03:47.49] Underneath that's going to be Oilify. Underneath
that, if you remember, we went back up to Artistic
[00:03:50.98] and we did the GIMPressionist, which
is like an impressionist type painting.
[00:03:55.50] We also had our Cartoon, and then of
course, our original photo as well.
[00:04:00.71] So as you can see the artistic filters give
you the ability to change the overall appearance
[00:04:05.19] of your image in many different ways.
[00:04:08.08] It's totally up to you what
they look like in the end.
[00:04:11.02] Just open them up, play around, and you
will be amazed at what you can come up with.
[00:04:14.58]
